40 Years Later, Star Trek Just Confirmed Captain Kirk’s Greatest Legacy

Forty years on, Star Trek has given Captain James T. Kirk his most significant achievement. Commanding the USS Enterprise – the Federation’s leading ship – is a hugely important role within Starfleet. Kirk is considered one of the best captains in Star Trek history, leaving behind an incredible legacy of exploration and discovery.

The upcoming Star Trek: Starfleet Academy series takes place far in the future, at the very end of the 32nd century. This is a period of rebuilding in the Star Trek universe, as the Federation recovers from a devastating event called “the Burn.” After Earth decides to rejoin the Federation, Starfleet Academy is being reopened in San Francisco. The campus pays tribute to Captain Kirk in many ways, including a building named after him, but it’s not until the second episode that the full impact of his legacy becomes clear.

Captain Kirk Succeeded in His Strangest Mission

To truly appreciate Kirk’s most unusual impact, it helps to know the fun story behind Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. This film sees Captain Kirk and his crew take a trip back in time, trying to save Earth from disaster. The threat? An alien probe searching for humpback whales, because whalesong was actually a form of interstellar communication. With the whales gone silent, the aliens were worried. Kirk’s solution was to bring whales forward in time to the 23rd century.

The episode nicely confirms the humpback whales did indeed survive their journey to the future. In a heartwarming scene from the Starfleet Academy episode, a Betazoid student named Tarima communicates with them. As Betazoids are naturally telepathic and empathetic, she’s able to connect with the whales much like Spock did in The Voyage Home. It’s likely she was also assessing the well-being of Earth’s other intelligent life forms and getting a feel for what life is like on Earth.

The whales shown in the 60th anniversary episode might seem like a simple nod to fans of Star Trek. However, they represent something much bigger: a lasting testament to James T. Kirk’s impact. Kirk’s crew saved an entire species from disappearing, and now, judging by the dedicated whale-watching facility at Starfleet Academy, they’re thriving. It’s a fitting and wonderful legacy for a captain and explorer like Kirk.
