Okay, sci-fi fans, get ready! It looks like Blake’s 7 is officially coming back to our screens. For those who don’t know, this show was a huge cult hit back in the late 70s and early 80s – I’m talking 1978 to 1981 on the BBC. I remember being totally hooked on its gritty, space-opera vibe. The original series, created by Terry Nation, starred Michael Keating, Paul Darrow, and Peter Tuddenham, and ran for four seasons with a total of 52 episodes. Now, a really experienced TV director is taking the helm for this reboot, so there’s a lot of potential here. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this one!
The classic sci-fi series Blake’s 7 centered on a band of rebels battling a controlling government across Earth and the galaxy, and drew on familiar themes from the space opera genre. According to Deadline, Peter Hoar – known for directing the highly praised episode “Long, Long Time” from the first season of HBO’s The Last of Us – is currently working on a new version of the show.
The Emmy-nominated actor recently started a new independent production company called Multitude Productions, partnering with Matthew Bouch and Jason Haigh-Ellery. They plan to produce a new version of the classic science fiction series Blake’s 7 through this company. The Multitude team, now including executive producer Lizzie Worsdell, is currently seeking a distributor for the show, and Bouch has expressed a strong preference for it to be with the BBC.
Bouch explained the company’s future plans, stating they’re motivated by their creative interests and a clear opportunity in the UK market. With Disney+ ending its partnership with Doctor Who after just two new seasons, there’s now a demand for original British genre content. They aim to fill that gap.
As a huge fan of quality television, I’ve been following director Hoar’s work for a while now. He really impressed me with his episodes of The Last of Us, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg! He’s directed for so many shows I love – It’s a Sin, The Umbrella Academy, even Daredevil and Cloak & Dagger. He even did two episodes of Doctor Who that came out in 2025! It’s fantastic to see his talent recognized – he’s been nominated for an Emmy for directing “Long, Long Time” and has won two BAFTAs, one for The Last of Us and another for It’s a Sin.
Matthew Bouch has worked as an executive producer on both A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and The Famous Five. He was also a producer for Being Human and a consulting producer on The Witcher.
Multitude Productions is developing a TV series based on Luke Rhinehart’s The Search for the Dice Man, with a major star set to lead the cast. Danny Wallace (Yes Man) is writing the series, and Tim Kirkby (Fleabag) will direct. They’re also working on an adaptation of Patrick Carman’s Skeleton Creek from Phillip Morgan, which Hoar describes as a blend of British Stranger Things and Skins.
Multitude Productions, particularly with its work on Blake’s 7, is trying to bring back some classic science fiction and fantasy shows by revisiting established stories and characters. It remains to be seen if this strategy will succeed, but it could potentially benefit popular series like Doctor Who.
