Looking back on 2025, it was a really interesting year for anime. We saw some series absolutely smash records – it was a strong year overall. But honestly, even with so many new shows, not everything hit the mark. I was surprised to see that even the third season of One-Punch Man, which everyone was looking forward to, didn’t quite reach the same level as its second season.
That’s why recognizing truly exceptional anime is so important, and this year’s top five were obvious picks. Three of them were highly anticipated and lived up to the hype, and the other two captivated audiences with their unique, compelling, and often dark storylines, proving to be some of the most innovative anime released this year.
5) Gachiakuta

Originally a popular manga from Kodansha’s Shonen Jump, Gachiakuta already had a dedicated following before its anime adaptation. But Studio Bones took the series to the next level with stunning animation and storytelling, making Gachiakuta the standout shonen anime of 2025 – and possibly one of the best in years. Their excellent adaptation broadened the series’ appeal and showcased its fresh, unconventional approach to the shonen genre, consistently subverting typical tropes.
This series is a standout in its genre, offering a fresh and captivating experience thanks to its immersive world and compelling characters, particularly the protagonist. Every episode is strong and keeps you hooked, drawing you further into a dark, unique, and compelling story. If you haven’t seen this anime, we highly recommend it.
4) Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc

The latest installment of Chainsaw Man is a movie called Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, which continues the story right after season 1. After a three-year wait, the series returned with a strong showing, impressing fans with its faithful and exciting adaptation of this story arc.
Featuring incredible animation, thrilling action, and touching scenes between Denji and Reze – all enhanced by a fantastic soundtrack – Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is being hailed as the best anime movie of 2025. Now that it’s available to stream, fans who didn’t get a chance to see it in theaters can finally enjoy it, and there’s really no excuse to miss out.
3) Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle

If you’re an anime fan, you’ve probably already seen Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle – it’s been the biggest anime release of the year. The movie has broken records and become Japan’s highest-grossing film ever. If you somehow haven’t seen it yet, rest assured it’s an exceptional and rare anime experience.
This movie is the impressive result of Ufotable’s dedication to the series, and it’s a perfect example of how to adapt anime beautifully. The studio’s incredible skill is visible in every single scene. Though the story could have worked as a regular TV series, this film is still one of the most ambitious and large-scale anime projects we’ve seen in years.
2) My Hero Academia Final Season

The final season of My Hero Academia is a remarkable achievement in anime, and it may be a long time before another series matches its impact. After nearly ten years, the show concludes a complex and lengthy story, and its scale is unlikely to be seen in many newer action anime. This finale solidifies My Hero Academia‘s place as one of the most memorable anime of recent times.
Viewers are amazed by the incredible animation in the final season, and the show is receiving widespread acclaim. Every episode has earned an IMDb rating of 9 or higher, a first for a typical anime season. As My Hero Academia nears its conclusion in 2025, this is a season no anime fan should miss. If you haven’t watched the series yet, now is the perfect time to jump in and witness the end of its incredible story.
1) Takopi’s Original Sin

I remember when the Takopi’s Original Sin anime was first announced – a lot of people predicted it would be incredibly dark. But it wasn’t until the show actually aired, and that big twist happened, that everyone realized just how deserving it was of that reputation. The story dives into really difficult topics like murder, suicide, bullying, and depression, and what makes it even more impactful is that it focuses on children, all around ten years old.
This anime beautifully shows how strong feelings can impact children and influence who they become. What makes it truly special is Takopi, an alien who starts out not understanding human emotions at all, but slowly learns how complicated they are. His journey of discovery is like watching a young child experience the world for the first time. Despite being only six episodes long, Takopi’s Original Sin is incredibly surprising and well-made – it’s something every anime fan should see. Many believe it’s the best anime of 2025, and it’s definitely not one to skip.
