DC Comics all take place in the same universe, so its heroes aren’t isolated. The world is filled with a huge cast of characters – heroes and villains alike – who appear in different comic books. A great thing about this is that heroes often team up, making the universe feel more realistic and giving readers more action. Major crises usually bring these heroes together; DC typically has a couple of big events each year where a powerful threat forces everyone to collaborate and find a solution.
Many of the most famous and well-loved comic book storylines are large-scale events that significantly impact the universe they’re set in. For example, Crisis on Infinite Earths completely changed how DC Comics told stories, and set a benchmark that’s still hard to beat. Blackest Night was a thrilling and emotional story that introduced a clever revision to established lore. There are many other great examples, but the main point is this: to mark being halfway through the 2020s, we’re going to look at and rank the five best DC events of the decade so far. We’re focusing only on big, company-wide storylines, not important events that focus on individual heroes. Let’s take a look back at some recent highlights!
5) Lazarus Planet

As a huge DC fan, I was completely hooked by Lazarus Planet. It all kicked off with this massive volcanic eruption that unleashed magical rain all over the world, and it seriously altered the powers of pretty much every superhero out there. Things got really intense when this ancient demon, Nezha, broke free and possessed Damian Wayne – Robin! It led to this huge battle to save the world, but what I loved most wasn’t just the epic scope of it all. The story did a fantastic job building up to the event, and focused on some really interesting characters. What was especially cool was that instead of relying on the usual big-name heroes, the story put the spotlight on some lesser-known and newer faces, which felt really fresh.
As a fan, I was really excited to see characters like Monkey Prince, Dreamer, and Power Girl get so much focus – it’s not something you usually see in events this big, and I loved it! Seeing how storylines from Monkey Prince, the 2021 Robin series, and Batman/Superman: World’s Finest all led to this felt amazing. And the ending? Seriously emotional and wonderfully over-the-top! The whole city of Gotham sacrificing pieces of themselves to bring Batman back – a full-on Gotham Spirit Bomb – was just perfect. It was a truly unforgettable moment!
4) Titans: Beast World

The Titans weren’t DC’s main hero team for very long, but a single storyline proved they had the potential to be major players. When the incredibly powerful Necrostar threatened to destroy the planet, the Titans discovered it had only been defeated once before, by Starro. Beast Boy, demonstrating a new level of power, transformed into a unique version of Starro and managed to repel the Necrostar. However, this victory was a setup. Amanda Waller and Doctor Hate – a physical manifestation of Raven’s dark side – secretly manipulated Beast Boy, wiping his memory and using him to infect many of the world’s strongest heroes, turning them into animal-human hybrids.
The recent event was a fantastic showcase of the Titans’ individual powers and their strong teamwork. It also skillfully heightened the conflict between Waller and the superheroes, clearly paving the way for a major upcoming storyline. This was a well-deserved story for the Titans, particularly because it gave each member a significant role and made them all feel essential to the team.
3) Absolute Power

As a huge DC fan, I have to say Absolute Power really delivered on the promise of Beast World. It all kicked off with Amanda Waller deciding superheroes, as a concept, needed to be destroyed. She teamed up with Failsafe and Brainiac Queen, and together they built their own version of the Justice League using Amazo robots – robots that stole the powers of almost every hero on Earth! With the real Justice League broken up, Green Arrow acting super shady like he’d turned on everyone, and even Jon Kent captured and brainwashed into being Waller’s puppet, our heroes were truly on the run like never before. It was intense!
This moment was the culmination of Amanda Waller’s arc, revealing the extent of her own corruption and hypocrisy – she’d become exactly what she condemned in heroes. Surprisingly, it wasn’t a major hero like Superman or Nightwing who finally stopped her, but the relatively unknown Air Wave, who exposed her crimes to the world. It was a decisive defeat for Waller. Beyond being a thrilling event, it perfectly launched the fantastic All-In initiative, a period that remains incredibly memorable.
2) Dark Nights: Death Metal

Following the events of Dark Knights: Metal, this story concludes the saga of Perpetua and wraps up a major storyline for DC Comics. Perpetua and the Batman Who Laughs completely reshaped the multiverse, replacing it with a dark, nightmarish version and trapping Earth’s heroes. After Wally West regained her memories, Wonder Woman led a fight to save everything. However, the Batman Who Laughs ultimately took control from Perpetua, becoming even more powerful and dangerous.
This story pitted truth against fear, and Wonder Woman had to embrace the flaws in her world to fix it. It featured fantastic tie-in stories, including a memorable path to redemption for Superboy-Prime and the welcome return of Wally West’s iconic Flash suit. Beyond the compelling narrative, the event also brought back all the memories from the pre-New 52 universe, allowing heroes to remember their full histories—a truly underrated achievement. Overall, it was a fantastic story with a stunning visual style, and it ranks among DC’s greatest works.
1) DC K.O.

Even if this event isn’t over yet, the early issues have already made it a standout hit. What really sets it apart is the fantastic way the story was built up, starting with the DC All-In Special. That era of DC comics is truly one of their best, with consistently high-quality storytelling. The anticipation for Darkseid’s return as King Omega was huge, and the event itself lives up to the excitement.
DC K.O. is a fantastic comic that’s both a deep look at what makes Superman and other heroes tick, and a genuinely exciting fighting tournament. It pits DC’s most iconic characters against each other, taking every chance to showcase their rich histories. It’s been a long time since a comic felt this purely fun! The creators’ passion for these characters shines through every page, and I’m thrilled to see how the upcoming battle between King Omega and Darkseid unfolds.
