Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball, created over forty years ago, is still one of the most famous and long-running anime and manga series ever made. Toei Animation, Japan’s oldest anime studio, turned the original manga into two main parts: Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Dragon Ball Z picks up the story years later, with Goku married and a father to young Gohan. While the first Dragon Ball series laid the groundwork, Dragon Ball Z brought the franchise international fame with its bigger battles, incredible transformations, and memorable characters, constantly raising the stakes as the heroes, known as the Z warriors, fought enemies who threatened to destroy the planet.
As a classic action-packed anime, Dragon Ball is famous for its exciting battles. These fights need strong villains to really challenge the heroes and help them grow. Dragon Ball Z features several major story arcs, each with memorable antagonists, but five villains stand out as the most impressive.
5) Android 18 Overpowered a Super Saiyan With Ease

Following the fight with Frieza, Vegeta dedicated himself to training and finally reached the powerful Super Saiyan level, greatly increasing his strength. The Z Warriors were already aware of the coming Androids, thanks to a warning from Future Trunks, so they all trained intensely to get ready for the battle. However, Vegeta, initially very confident after becoming a Super Saiyan, suffered a humbling defeat at the hands of Android 18, who easily defeated him without much effort.
4) Android 17 Vs. Piccolo Is One of the Best Fights Ever

The battle between Android 17 and Piccolo is a standout fight in the series, but it doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. Piccolo reached a new level of power by fusing with Kami, but even that wasn’t enough to defeat Android 17. While the fight was surprisingly long, Android 17 was clearly the stronger fighter and would have won, even with Kami’s sacrifice. A particularly impressive part of the fight was Android 17’s barrier, which effectively blocked Piccolo’s most powerful attacks.
3) Super Buu’s Human Extinction Attack Is Terrifyingly Devastating

Super Buu, one of the various forms Buu can take, unleashed a devastating attack called the Human Extinction Attack – one of the strongest energy blasts in the Dragon Ball series. With a simple hand gesture, he fired a relentless barrage of energy, instantly wiping out everyone on Earth. He even targeted the Lookout, doing this right before the Z Warriors, who were unable to intervene. While Super Buu wasn’t the villain’s strongest form, the destruction he caused was immense, and things only got worse from there.
2) Frieza’s Ultimate Form Still Gives Us Chills

Frieza is still considered one of the greatest villains in the entire Dragon Ball series, largely because of his actions in the Frieza Saga. As a ruthless ruler of the universe, he traveled to Namek seeking the Dragon Balls, where he clashed with Vegeta and others. Throughout the saga, Frieza transformed multiple times, each form highlighting the immense danger he posed. His final form is particularly terrifying, radiating pure lethality and inspiring fear in his enemies. Without Goku achieving the Super Saiyan transformation, no one at that time could have defeated him.
1) Cell Killed Goku Without Even Trying

Cell stands out as the best villain in Dragon Ball Z for many reasons, from his impressive abilities to his captivating writing. One of his most impactful moments was effortlessly killing Goku, which pushed Gohan to unlock his Super Saiyan 2 form. Gohan then consistently dominated Cell, forcing the villain to resort to a desperate plan: self-destruction. Cell believed he could regenerate, but the blast would kill everyone else. Luckily, Goku sacrificed himself to save them all, choosing to remain dead for seven years in the hope of preventing future threats from targeting Earth.
