The Nintendo Switch isn’t usually the first console that comes to mind for playing fast-paced, action-packed first-person shooter games. While the Switch can handle many good FPS titles, its Joy-Con controllers don’t quite offer the accuracy needed for a truly excellent experience. As a result, many of the most popular FPS games from recent years, including Call of Duty, haven’t been available on the Switch, even though Microsoft had promised to bring the series to the console.
Although the Nintendo Switch isn’t the best console for first-person shooters, there are still many excellent FPS games you can play on it. The games generally look and play better on other consoles or PCs, but if you only have a Switch – or just want to relax and enjoy a fast-paced, action-packed shooter in a comfortable setting – these games are a great choice.
5. Metro 2033 Redux

I absolutely love the novel Metro 2033 – it’s a gripping, immersive, and thought-provoking sci-fi story set after a global catastrophe. Thankfully, Dmitry Glukhovsky’s brilliant book was turned into a video game, also called Metro 2033, and later updated as Metro 2033 Redux. The game captures the novel’s intense horror and atmosphere, and even includes some of its deeper ideas, but adds exciting survival gameplay, fantastic shooting, and beautifully crafted environments.
Luckily, both Metro 2033 Redux and its sequel, Last Light Redux, are now available on the Nintendo Switch. The Switch versions run remarkably well, offering the same intense atmosphere and frightening moments as the original PC and console releases. Like Alien: Isolation (another excellent first-person shooter on Switch), Metro 2033 Redux translates surprisingly well to handheld play thanks to its slower pace and focus on survival horror. Precise aiming isn’t crucial, so the Switch’s Joy-Cons work just fine. Metro 2033 is a genuinely fantastic first-person shooter that doesn’t get enough attention, and even though it’s often eclipsed by Metro: Exodus, it’s definitely worth playing, particularly if you enjoy horror or FPS games.
4. Crysis Remastered Trilogy

The Crysis Remastered Trilogy is actually three games, so I’m bending the rules a bit by including them all. You can purchase each game separately or as a bundle, and each one offers a unique experience, making it feel right to cover them together. While the first Crysis isn’t as popular as the sequels, it still features beautiful environments and a fun, open-world experience similar to Far Cry. The second and third games, however, are considered some of the best single-player first-person shooter campaigns ever created, and they look fantastic on the Switch.
The Crysis Remastered Trilogy still looks amazing, especially considering it was once the gold standard for graphics on PCs – and it runs incredibly well on Nintendo Switch! I’ve played all three games, and I can say with confidence that if you want short, action-packed first-person shooters with stunning visuals, epic moments, and a wild sci-fi story, this is the definitive collection. These games are a rare find, and they’re a perfect fit for both general gaming and the Switch’s handheld format. It’s a shame we don’t see games made like this anymore.
3. Borderlands Legendary Collection

I’m bending the rules a bit by including the Borderlands Legendary Collection instead of just one game, but since they’re all very similar, it felt right to group them together. While Borderlands 2 is the strongest of the bunch, each game offers a fun and unique experience within the series’ signature chaotic, loot-focused gameplay. Borderlands has consistently delivered excellent gunplay and a never-ending supply of vibrant, satisfying loot, making it a standout and influential series in the looter shooter genre.
The Nintendo Switch versions of these games are just as captivating as ever, offering incredibly addictive gameplay. If you haven’t played any Borderlands games before, this collection is a must-have. While Borderlands 3 and 4 are enjoyable, the series was at its best with the earlier titles, especially Borderlands 2. Along with the Bioshock trilogy (another excellent set of first-person shooters available on Switch), the Borderlands Legendary Collection is a fantastic addition to any FPS fan’s library.
2. DOOM (2016)

DOOM (2016) was a surprisingly impressive game for the Nintendo Switch and helped show what the console was capable of. It seemed unbelievable that such a visually advanced game could run on a handheld system, but Panic Button managed to make it happen. While it doesn’t look as polished as the versions on other consoles and PCs, the fast-paced, chaotic gameplay makes that less noticeable. Because DOOM focuses more on quick action and shooting enemies than precise aiming, it plays incredibly well on the Switch, even with the console’s hardware limitations.
The 2016 version of DOOM is a fantastic first-person shooter, brilliantly blending the fast-paced action of classic games with the features players expect today. While sequels like Eternal (also on Switch) offer more, the 2016 DOOM remains the best choice if you’re looking for that original, intense experience with updated graphics, well-designed levels, and a huge selection of weapons. It’s definitely worth checking out on the Nintendo Switch.
1. Metroid Prime Remastered

Nintendo isn’t typically associated with first-person shooter games, which makes Metroid Prime Remastered a real standout. This fantastic update to the 2002 GameCube game is a prime example of excellent game design, with immersive environments, clever puzzles, satisfying combat, and stunning visuals. It’s truly one of the best FPS games ever created, and its beautiful world, diverse enemies, and varied puzzles keep the long gameplay experience engaging from start to finish.
Many people love Metroid Prime, but it’s often forgotten when discussing the greatest first-person shooters. That’s a shame, because even though its shooting mechanics aren’t as intricate as games like Call of Duty, it offers a remarkably immersive, exciting, and action-filled campaign that stands out from most other FPS games. Metroid Prime Remastered is easily one of the best games on the Nintendo Switch, and the most fun FPS you can play on it. Anyone with even a passing interest in the genre should definitely check it out.
