5 Best Marvel Events of the Decade So Far, Ranked

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve always loved their big event comics. What’s amazing is how they bring everyone together – all the heroes and villains – for these massive, universe-altering stories. It’s so much fun to see characters I love team up with others I never expected! These events aren’t just about action; they really celebrate the history and relationships built over decades of comics. Honestly, these events feel like the biggest, most important stories of the year, and they often change the direction of a character’s journey forever.

As a huge Marvel fan, I’ve noticed they really love doing these big, universe-altering events – usually at least once a year, but lately even more, like two or three! These events can completely change things in the comics and often take over storylines for months. Since we’re halfway through the 2020s, I thought it would be fun to look back at what I consider the five best Marvel events of the decade and remember what made them so special. So, let’s take a trip down memory lane, shall we?

5) “Age of Revelation”

“Age of Revelation” is a tribute to the classic “Age of Apocalypse” storyline, marking its 30th anniversary. The story begins with Cyclops and Beast suddenly finding themselves ten years in the future, where they discover the successor to Apocalypse – Douglass Ramsey, now known as Revelation – has seized power over most of the United States. He’s established himself as a mutant ruler, presenting himself as a savior. The event has been engaging, focusing on Cyclops’s attempts to lead the future X-Men, the enigmatic behavior of Beast, and Revelation’s ambitious plan to transform the entire world.

Despite being enjoyable, this event suffers from problems with its connections to the larger story. Most of the tie-in issues don’t really explore the interesting possibilities of the setting, instead treating it as if everything is fairly normal. The concept of having two versions of the Rogue character feels unnecessary, and the way Magik was portrayed has upset some fans. Ultimately, though, the event was fun, and while it won’t be as famous as the previous one, it’s still likely to be remembered fondly by many.

4) Blood Hunt

The ‘Blood Hunt’ storyline began when a mysterious darkness blocked out the sun, allowing vampires to emerge and take over, even in daylight. Leading them was Blade, the very hero who was meant to protect humanity from the undead. This wasn’t just a typical vampire attack, but a full-scale invasion from another dimension. As Marvel’s heroes united to fight back, some were even turned into vampires themselves. It was ultimately revealed that Blade had been possessed by Varnae, a powerful, ancient sorcerer and the very first vampire. Although the heroes managed to free Blade and banish Varnae, the event drastically altered the world.

Miles Morales is now a vampire, Doctor Doom has become the Sorcerer Supreme, and vampires can now walk freely in the sunlight. This storyline is incredibly exciting, bringing together the Avengers and other Marvel heroes to fight a powerful nighttime army, with standout moments for each character. Beyond the thrilling action, this event also lays the groundwork for future storylines, making it a truly epic and essential read for Marvel fans.

3) A.X.E.: Judgement Day

A huge conflict erupted when the Eternals learned mutants had found a way to live forever, leading them to declare war. Simultaneously, the world blamed Krakoa for keeping this immortality to itself. In an attempt to stop the war, the Avengers reawakened the massive, dead Celestial they’d been using as a headquarters. However, the awakened Celestial, known as the Porgenitor, announced it would judge all of humanity within twenty-four hours, with the fate of Earth hanging in the balance. The judgment began with Captain America, and he didn’t pass.

This story is emotionally powerful and tackles a profound question: does humanity deserve to survive, given all its imperfections? It offers an honest answer without shying away from the realities of life. The way everyone’s secrets were revealed and used to save the day was truly impressive. However, despite feeling like the most important event, it ultimately ranks third because it doesn’t affect anything beyond itself. Unlike the other events on this list, which had far-reaching consequences, this one feels strangely isolated.

2) King in Black

Although Knull, the Symbiote god, is sometimes criticized for being a simple villain, his initial invasion in the King in Black storyline was incredibly well done. After a long development in the Venom comics, Knull finally arrived on Earth and exceeded expectations. The story was a particularly meaningful experience for Eddie Brock and Venom, forcing them to face their own flaws and find a way to be heroes despite their troubled histories and inner demons.

When Venom first appeared in Marvel comics, he quickly proved to be a compelling character. The story arc concluded spectacularly with Eddie Brock stepping down as Venom to help the symbiotes find a peaceful path forward, which brilliantly introduced his son, Dylan, as the new host. It was an amazing and impactful story that gave me chills when I first read it, and it truly earns the praise it receives for its clever groundwork for future adventures.

1) Devil’s Reign

The election of Wilson Fisk as mayor of New York City foreshadowed a major conflict. It began when the Kingpin outlawed all masked heroes and vigilantes, enforcing his new laws with absolute authority. He used the Purple Man’s mind control to maintain order, but the situation quickly focused on his long-standing enemy, Daredevil, who stepped up as a symbol of hope. What followed was a brutal showdown between the two, fueled by their deep and unwavering animosity towards each other.

Wilson Fisk, also known as the Kingpin, remembered Daredevil’s secret identity and tragically killed Matt Murdock’s brother, Mike, as a way to get to Daredevil himself. Ultimately, Daredevil defeated Fisk, preserving his own morality and liberating New York City from the Kingpin’s control, inspiring others to overcome their fears. This pivotal storyline, written by Chip Zdarsky, brought Matt Murdock and Fisk’s long-standing conflict to a definitive end, allowing both characters to begin new journeys. It was a complex, emotionally challenging, and ultimately satisfying conclusion to their rivalry – a truly remarkable event that involved the efforts of many Marvel heroes.
