The X-Men are Marvel’s most prominent team of mutants, representing all mutantkind and consistently facing any dangers they encounter. Dedicated to protecting mutants worldwide, the team has included many different members over the years. It’s fitting that new mutant characters are usually first seen in X-Men comics. With a constantly changing lineup and often multiple active teams, the X-Men have featured a huge number of characters – potentially hundreds – throughout their history.
Most mutants have been part of the X-Men at some point, but a few haven’t. We’re going to take a look at five of the most powerful mutant heroes who haven‘t joined the team… yet. It’s likely they will eventually, but for now, they remain a unique group. Let’s explore each of these amazing Marvel heroes and their reasons for staying independent.
5) Namora

Unlike her cousin Namor, who has often switched between being a hero and a villain, Namora has consistently fought for good. Like Namor, she’s a unique blend of human, mutant, and Atlantean heritage, allowing her to live indefinitely on land and granting her the power of flight. She’s incredibly powerful—capable of battling even Captain Marvel—and fiercely defends her people. When Namor became a ruthless ruler, Namora bravely led a rebellion to free them, even risking her own life with a willingness to face public execution as an example of her courage. Though she doesn’t appear often, Namora is just as compelling a character as Namor and deserves more attention.
4) Justice

Let me tell you about Vance Astrovik, also known as Justice – seriously, this guy is amazing and so underappreciated. His story is wild: he developed telekinesis when his future self tried to prevent him from becoming an astronaut, which ended up with him being frozen for a thousand years! He started out as Marvel Boy, but after a really tough situation involving his father, and some time in jail, he reinvented himself. What I really love about Vance is how complex he is. He’s constantly battling his own self-doubt, even though he’s incredibly powerful, and he’s a huge fanboy of other heroes. It’s fascinating! He actually grows a lot while he’s in prison, becoming more mature. Honestly, he deserves way more attention and screen time – he’s a truly great character.
3) Mister Immortal

Craig Hollis is effectively immortal, instantly recovering from any cause of death. He’s not simply a mutant, but represents the next step in evolution – a ‘Homo Supreme.’ Despite being destined to witness the end of the multiverse with Franklin Richards, Craig is a deeply unhappy person. He discovered his ability to return from death while attempting suicide and decided to use it for good, becoming a hero and forming the Great Lakes Avengers. While often presented as a comedic character, he possesses surprising emotional depth, which is what makes him so appealing.
2) Squirrel Girl

Doreen Green, also known as the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, started as a humorous way to show Iron Man that appearances can be deceiving. What began as a gag – her defeating Doctor Doom with an army of squirrels – turned into a running joke and then a Marvel tradition: she can beat anyone. She’s consistently defeated major villains one-on-one, including Thanos, Korvac, and even the One Below All (as seen in Squirrel Girl: Infinity Comic). While she often loses in visual media, Squirrel Girl should never be underestimated – whenever she appears, a powerful villain is likely about to fall.
1) Franklin Richards

Franklin Richards’s origins have been complicated by changes to his backstory. Initially presented as a mutant, it was later suggested he was actually a human who gained powers and subconsciously altered reality to believe he was a mutant. Currently, the story shows he is a mutant, but he’s using his abilities to appear as a powerless human. Despite these shifting origins, Franklin is undeniably one of the most powerful beings ever born. He can effortlessly reshape reality and has been creating entire universes since childhood, even helping to rebuild the entire multiverse after its destruction. However, his strong loyalty to the Fantastic Four suggests he’s unlikely to abandon them, no matter how powerful he becomes.
