5 Best Power Rangers Shows for Beginners

Power Rangers is a long-running series, and we don’t suggest starting with the very first season. While Mighty Morphin Power Rangers has a nostalgic appeal with its early ’90s vibe, it’s not the best introduction to the show. The special effects are a bit old-fashioned, and the storylines weren’t as polished as they would become in later seasons. Over time, the show improved its formula, resulting in seasons that are still considered some of the most enjoyable kids’ entertainment around.

With so many seasons of the show available, it can be tough to know where to begin. Luckily, five seasons are consistently recommended as the best starting points for new viewers. While they might not be the absolute best seasons overall, they’re a great way to get into the series. Now that the show is on break, it’s the perfect time to catch up and enjoy some fantastic Power Rangers adventures!

5) Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue

The initial six seasons of Power Rangers told one continuous story focused on Zordon, concluding with Power Rangers In Space. While seasons like Zeo and In Space are enjoyable – In Space especially – they aren’t the best place to jump into the series. The seventh season, Lost Galaxy, builds on storylines from the first six, so it’s also not recommended as a starting point.

Lightspeed Rescue marked a new beginning for the Power Rangers series, completely separate from the stories of the previous seven seasons. It was also unique for featuring Rangers who were adults with established jobs. While the show definitely feels old now, having debuted 25 years ago, and suffers from stiff acting and unmemorable villains, the action sequences are still enjoyable. The special effects used for the Titanium Ranger, in particular, were remarkably well done and remain a highlight of the entire franchise. It’s a shame we didn’t get to see that Ranger in more episodes.

4) Power Rangers RPM

Recent seasons of Power Rangers hadn’t been successful while Disney owned the show, and it was close to being canceled. Power Rangers RPM was Disney’s attempt to turn things around with a more serious and grown-up season. However, RPM ended up using footage from a Super Sentai series that was particularly silly, featuring things like talking robots and lots of slapstick comedy.

Despite some behind-the-scenes changes, Power Rangers RPM managed to be a surprisingly engaging season, balancing serious themes with playful humor. The show’s self-aware jokes, like the now-famous line “I’m Scottish!”, often landed perfectly. While a mid-season change in leadership created some tonal inconsistencies, the show still succeeded. Though Power Rangers RPM didn’t prevent Disney from selling the franchise back to Saban, it has since gained a dedicated and passionate fanbase.

3) Power Rangers Time Force

Lightspeed Rescue was a successful step for the Power Rangers series, showing it could move beyond the original Mighty Morphin’ characters and settings. Power Rangers Time Force built on this success, proving the show could be truly great with fresh characters and storylines. Time Force stood out for its surprisingly strong and mature writing, featuring compelling villains and characters with realistic personal struggles.

While some Rangers get much more focus than others – particularly the Red, Pink, and Quantum Rangers – the season still manages to create a compelling story with real emotional weight. It features some of the strongest acting seen in the entire series. Overall, Time Force is a standout season and well worth watching for any fan, or even those just curious about the show.

2) Power Rangers Dino Charge

Power Rangers in the 2010s is a bit of a controversial period for fans. When Saban bought the franchise back from Disney in 2010, it started what’s known as the ‘Neo-Saban’ era. While this brought the show to high definition, many of the series from this time were unpopular, with Megaforce and Ninja Steel often cited as the weakest installments.

Many fans consider Power Rangers Dino Charge the highlight of the modern Power Rangers series, praising its clever writing and likeable characters. It stands out for its high production quality and compelling story. While the follow-up season, Super Dino Charge, tried to do too much with a large number of heroes and villains, the original Dino Charge cast is still considered one of the best in the show’s history and is definitely worth checking out.

1) Power Rangers Dino Thunder

Following a few seasons that moved away from high school, Power Rangers Dino Thunder successfully reintroduced the school setting to the series. Essentially a modern update of the original Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, Dino Thunder benefited from significantly improved production quality. The sets and models are still considered some of the best in the entire franchise, and while some of the effects now look a little dated, they still have a certain appeal.

Jason David Frank reprises his role as Tommy Oliver, now a mentor to a new team of Rangers, and eventually becomes the Black Ranger for the season. While bringing back a familiar character like Tommy could have made Dino Thunder feel less fresh, the show skillfully explains everything, preventing any confusion. The new Rangers are particularly enjoyable, and the villains are genuinely threatening. Overall, this season excels in many areas, making it not only one of the best Power Rangers seasons ever created, but also a great starting point for new viewers.
