5 Best RPGs You Can Beat In A Weekend

Role-playing games are becoming increasingly lengthy, and it feels like we have less and less free time. While many people enjoy a massive, 100+ hour RPG now and then, sometimes you just want a game you can finish in a few hours. It’s hard for many of us to dedicate the time needed to fully experience games like The Witcher 3 or The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, even if we’d love to. Luckily, there are a few truly excellent, shorter RPGs available that you can complete in a weekend, or even a single day.

These RPGs are just as enjoyable as longer games, and sometimes even more so. They let you reach high levels quickly, but they still deliver epic stories, immersive worlds, memorable characters, and satisfying character development. If you’re looking for a great RPG to play over a weekend, these are excellent choices.

5. Cat Quest

The Cat Quest games – including all the sequels – are beautiful, charming, and wonderfully paced open-world RPGs. As you play through the series, the combat gets more complex, and the maps become richer with dungeons and enemies. They’re perfect for a quick gaming weekend! They aren’t overly difficult (though some bosses might take a couple of tries), and the stories are lighthearted, but they’re colorful, relaxing, and offer just enough content to leave you feeling accomplished. You can finish the first game in about 5 hours, the second in a little over 7, and the third around 6 hours – meaning you could complete all three in under 20 hours.

What’s appealing about Cat Quest is how easy it is to pick up and play. It’s perfect for newcomers to RPGs, but also a refreshing change of pace for those tired of huge, complex games like The Witcher 3. Cat Quest focuses on the core RPG experience while still offering features we expect today, like character customization, satisfying progression, and special abilities – even ships in the latest installment. While the games tell a connected story, you don’t have to play them in order. If you’re looking for a fun, self-contained fantasy RPG you can finish in just a few hours, I highly recommend Cat Quest and its sequels.

4. Haven

Haven is a special RPG set in a partially open world, where you play as Kay and Yu, a couple starting over on a strange, fractured planet. You’ll explore the planet as both characters – you can play with a friend, but it’s designed for one player – collecting resources, cleaning up the environment, and battling enemies in fast-paced combat. What really sets Haven apart is its combat system; it’s surprisingly strategic for such a relaxing game, requiring you to control both characters simultaneously. With about 10 hours of main story content, the game keeps things interesting by challenging you to make quick decisions about timing and defense.

What really sets Haven apart is its fantastic dialogue, story, and the couple at its heart. You play as Yu and Kay – who can be any gender combination – and their relationship feels incredibly real and complex, developed through many thoughtful conversations. The game asks you to make choices that shape how their relationship evolves, leading to multiple different endings. While you can finish Haven in a weekend, it’s worth exploring all the endings because they’re all so well-written and satisfying.

3. Child of Light

Child of Light stands out as a product of a more creative period for Ubisoft. Unlike their large, open-world games like Assassin’s Creed or ongoing service titles like Rainbow Six Siege, it’s a focused, single-player RPG platformer. It’s beautiful, dreamlike, and features a unique, fairy-tale art style. The story is both touching and unforgettable, a genuinely heartwarming adventure filled with charming characters you’ll enjoy getting to know.

Child of Light features engaging, fast-paced combat that stays fun throughout its approximately 11-hour adventure. The beautiful soundtrack is another highlight – I still enjoy listening to it even after finishing the game. Child of Light is truly unique, and it makes me hope Ubisoft creates more games like it. It’s a genuine masterpiece and a fantastic RPG to pick up if you’re looking for something to play over a weekend.

2. Dark Messiah of Might and Magic

Before Arkane Studios created the critically acclaimed immersive game Dishonored, they released a truly innovative RPG called Dark Messiah of Might and Magic in 2006. Set in the Might and Magic universe, Dark Messiah is a fast-paced, first-person RPG where the environment plays a huge role in combat. Players can interact with almost anything – objects, enemies, and the level itself – in creative ways, and this focus on environmental interaction is what made the game so memorable and helped shape Arkane’s signature immersive gameplay style.

Though not as expansive as Skyrim, Dark Messiah still offers a good amount of freedom to explore. It’s not a fully open-world game, but it lets you tackle missions in creative ways within its levels. Like many of Arkane’s older titles, Dark Messiah is relatively short – you can finish it in around 10 hours, making it a great choice for players who want a fast-paced, action-packed RPG experience. It’s not currently available on modern consoles, but you can find Dark Messiah of Might and Magic for a good price on platforms like Steam. If you’re looking for a classic Xbox 360 RPG that delivers a lot of fun in a concise package, Arkane’s Dark Messiah is an excellent choice.

1. Undertale

It’s possible to finish Undertale in about 7 hours, but experiencing all the important endings will probably take a little over 20. And trust me, it’s worth it – each ending is completely different, emotionally impactful, and often surprisingly deep. It’s no surprise Undertale isn’t just a fantastic, short RPG, but one of the greatest RPGs ever made. It’s widely praised for a reason, and many people have already played it.

If you haven’t played Undertale yet, or want to revisit it, it’s famous for doing things differently when it comes to battles, how the story unfolds, and its characters. It’s packed with memorable people, tons of different endings to discover, brilliantly written and emotional dialogue, and an amazing soundtrack – all adding up to an unforgettable experience that will stay with you long after you finish. Undertale is the perfect example of a great indie RPG – a true classic that has inspired many games since. If you have some free time, it’s absolutely worth playing.
