5 Characters Missing From The Harry Potter Movies The Reboot Can Finally Include

A major benefit of the new HBO Max series compared to the original Harry Potter movies is that it has more time to tell the story. By dedicating an entire season to each book, the show can bring back characters who were left out of the films and fully develop them. Removing these characters, while sometimes necessary for pacing, can change the story’s special feel, mood, and how the characters interact. Even if they aren’t central to the main plot, these details add important depth that was lost before.

With the new show promising a closer adaptation of the Wizarding World, fans are especially excited to see certain beloved characters brought to life on screen. They’re hoping these characters will also bring with them deeper storylines and more complex ideas that weren’t fully developed in the movies.

5) Winky

Winky is a nervous house-elf in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire who serves Barty Crouch Sr., and unknowingly helps conceal his secrets. She’s at the Quidditch World Cup and is discovered with the wand used to create the Dark Mark, leading to her dismissal. After losing her job, she falls into despair and begins drinking while working at Hogwarts. Winky’s story is sad, and it’s connected to Barty Crouch Jr.’s escape, the secrets of the Triwizard Tournament, and Hermione’s efforts to help house-elves. Removing Winky diminishes the emotional depth of the house-elf storyline, and the Goblet of Fire film unfortunately omits the house-elves entirely, also making the Crouch family’s plot less impactful. Many fans hope a potential reboot will give Winky the attention her story deserves.

4) Pigwidgeon

I absolutely loved Pigwidgeon – or ‘Pig’ as everyone called him! Sirius Black gave him to Ron at the end of Prisoner of Azkaban, and he was just the most energetic little owl. Seriously, he was always flying around! He quickly became the Weasley family’s chaotic mail carrier, causing all sorts of trouble, especially at breakfast, and Ron never really managed to get him under control. You see Pig in a few of the books, like Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix. I was so disappointed they left him out of the films, though. It really took away some funny moments for Ron and a bit of much-needed lightness in the much darker Order of the Phoenix. Pig really helped balance things out and kept that cozy, whimsical feel from the earlier books. If they ever reboot the series, bringing Pig back would add so much to the worldbuilding and give us some of that warm, comforting atmosphere the movies were missing.

3) Peeves

Peeves the Poltergeist, a famously mischievous character, was originally featured in the Harry Potter books, starting with the first one. He’s unpredictable, siding with whoever amuses him, which makes him both a nuisance and, sometimes, surprisingly useful – as seen in Order of the Phoenix. His best moment is definitely his hilarious revolt against Dolores Umbridge, where he playfully supports Fred and George Weasley and relentlessly torments her throughout the year. Removing Peeves took away a piece of Hogwarts’ unique character, as he embodies the castle’s rebellious spirit. Luckily, Peeves will be appearing in the new series, meaning we’ll finally see his battle against Umbridge come to life with modern visual effects – something fans have been waiting for since the first movie came out in 2001.

2) Professor Binns

Professor Cuthbert Binns is Hogwarts’ only ghost teacher, and his History of Magic lessons are famously dull. He simply floats through the blackboard and drones on, often putting Harry and Ron to sleep. The story goes he died in the staff room but continued teaching without realizing it! Despite being so boring, Binns is important to the plot – he’s the one who eventually explains the legend of the Chamber of Secrets, after Hermione convinces him to share. He also makes Hogwarts feel more like a real school, because everyone can relate to being bored in class. Including Binns in a reboot would allow for a more book-accurate explanation of the Chamber of Secrets and add to the everyday student experience at Hogwarts.

1) Ludo Bagman

Ludo Bagman, the loud and slightly suspicious head of Magical Games and Sports, plays a significant role in Goblet of Fire. A former Quidditch player, he clearly favors Harry throughout the Triwizard Tournament. It’s later revealed he’s secretly gambling on the competition. His comical escape at the end of the book involves running away from his bookie debts. Removing Bagman would mean losing a key part of the book’s blend of sports and politics, as well as a source of humor and a potential suspect in the mystery of Harry’s name being entered into the Tournament. He also serves as a warning about corruption within the Ministry, a theme that becomes important in Order of the Phoenix. Including him in a reimagining would bring back the intricate world of Wizarding administration, heighten the existing political conflict in Book 4, and add depth to the more complex storylines that follow.
