Arcade racers have a unique appeal. Unlike realistic racing games, they prioritize fun, speed, and over-the-top action. While titles like Forza Horizon 5 still offer that experience, we don’t see new arcade racers released as often as we used to. Luckily, the classic arcade racers from the 90s and 2000s are still incredibly enjoyable today. They can be a bit hard to find, but they’re well worth the effort if you can track them down.
These five classic arcade racing games are still fun to play today. They’re listed in the order they came out, so the order doesn’t reflect a ranking.
5) Wipeout 2097

The Wipeout series has many great racing games, but Wipeout 2097 is considered the best. It improved on the original’s fast-paced, anti-gravity racing, making it even more thrilling and challenging. The controls are incredibly smooth, and the game boasts a fantastic, high-energy soundtrack from the late 90s.
Okay, so the way they changed up the weapon system in Wipeout 2097 isn’t going to click with everyone, but honestly, it gave the game this really cool, unique feel. And there’s just so much to do! You keep unlocking new tracks and pilots by racking up medals, which is awesome. Plus, each ship handles differently – some are fast, some are tough, and so on. That means if you’re looking for a real challenge and want to keep coming back for more, you’ll find it here.
4) R4: Ridge Racer Type 4

The fourth Ridge Racer game not only met expectations, but exceeded them. R4 really focuses on powersliding, and skilled players will need to become experts at it to conquer the more difficult races.
Similar to Wipeout 2097, R4 offers a lot of lasting appeal. You can unlock 321 different cars and choose from four racing teams in Grand Prix mode. Visually, it was ahead of its time, striking a balance between the realism of Gran Turismo and the fast-paced, less technically demanding arcade racers.
3) Burnout 3: Takedown

While Burnout Paradise is a great game, Burnout 3: Takedown still delivers the most thrilling sense of speed and destruction. Paradise improved the series with its open world, but Takedown is the ultimate choice for intense crashes and competitive racing with friends.
Burnout 3 is a fantastic game on its own, but it truly shines when played with friends. The thrill of taking down a friend for the win, especially with up to eight players in Party Crash, makes it one of the best games ever. You don’t even need to be a racing fan to enjoy Burnout 3 – the exciting crashes are enough to make anyone a believer.
2) Need for Speed Underground 2

The Need for Speed series has a lot of great games, and fans often debate which is the best. While Hot Pursuit or Most Wanted are popular choices, I believe Underground 2 strikes the perfect balance. It has excellent gameplay and really captures the exciting, flashy car culture of the early 2000s. Although there was an official Pimp My Ride game, Underground 2 is the one that truly gave players that feeling, alongside fast-paced racing.
Need for Speed: Underground 2 offers a lot to do in its open world. You can complete numerous side missions to unlock new car parts and customize your vehicles. You’ll want to build a collection of cars, as the game features various race types. While it doesn’t have the intense police chases the NFS series is famous for, you likely won’t notice the absence.
1) OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast

The Out Run series has many great games, but I’m choosing OutRun 2006 as the standout title. It’s the ninth installment and an enhanced version of OutRun 2 (from 2003). This 2006 update includes content from Coast 2 Coast, adding more races for single players and improving the multiplayer experience.
The Coast 2 Coast career mode offered various challenges, including a Knockout mode where players raced to avoid being eliminated. You could race against up to five opponents online, and while it didn’t have the over-the-top action of Burnout 3, OutRun 2006 was a strong contender in multiplayer. The game also looked fantastic for its time, with 15 detailed cars to choose from. While it won’t compete with modern graphics, it still has a great classic visual style.
