Tabletop role-playing games, like Dungeons & Dragons, are most fun when everyone can play together in person. There’s a special energy that comes from being in the same room. However, it’s often hard to get enough people together consistently. Between busy schedules, bad weather, and people relocating, in-person campaigns can easily fall apart. That’s why it’s helpful to have ways to enjoy RPGs with friends online.
Moving your usual D&D games online with a virtual tabletop is one option, but these platforms can be tricky to learn and require a lot of setup for the Dungeon Master. If you’re looking for a cooperative RPG that offers a similar experience to D&D without all the hassle, there are some great alternatives. Here are 5 games to try if you want to play an RPG with friends that feels almost like D&D.
5) Enshrouded

Platform(s): PC via Steam (Early Access)
Price: $29.99
If you enjoy detailed resource management and a realistic, challenging experience in D&D, Enshrouded could be a great fit. This online action RPG lets you team up with up to 15 other players to survive and thrive in a shared world. You’ll create a unique character and class, then work together with friends to overcome the dangers around you.
Even though it’s still being developed, Enshrouded has already gained a lot of fans thanks to its detailed character classes and exciting combat. While it’s playable alone, the game is best enjoyed with friends as you build and explore. The open world really makes you feel like you’re on a classic D&D adventure, even if it doesn’t include the traditional tabletop rules.
4) D&D Online

Platform(s): PC
Price: Free-to-play (optional in-game purchases)
If you’re looking for a video game that truly captures the experience of Dungeons & Dragons, Dungeons & Dragons Online is one of the closest you’ll find. This game, released in 2012 by Standing Stone Games, aims to bring the classic 3.5 edition gameplay to a free-to-play online world. You’ll create your own character and explore a world that stays true to the lore of D&D as it was in the 3.5 edition. While some might find the graphics and gameplay a bit old-fashioned compared to newer cooperative games, it’s still a great choice for those who want a traditional tabletop RPG experience in a multiplayer video game.
Dungeons & Dragons Online is well-regarded on Steam, with players giving it a ‘Very Positive’ rating, and the developers continue to add new content. While you can enjoy solo adventures, it’s fundamentally a massively multiplayer online role-playing game, meaning you can team up with friends and players from all over the world. Best of all, it’s free to play, making it a great option when you’re craving a Dungeons & Dragons experience but can’t gather a group in person.
3) Demeo x D&D: Battlemarked

Platform(s): PC, PS5, PS VR2, and Meta Quest (VR opional)
Price: $29.99
This new game combines the gameplay of Demeo with the world of Dungeons & Dragons. It features official stories and settings from the D&D universe, but plays differently than the traditional tabletop role-playing game. You’ll use special dice and a card system to battle through D&D adventures, either by yourself or with others. The game is played on a virtual tabletop designed to look like a professional game master’s setup, and optional virtual reality support provides an even more immersive experience.
Released in November 2025, Battlemarked has received generally positive reviews on Steam, despite a few minor issues. Many players, including my D&D group, feel it’s the closest experience to playing Dungeons & Dragons without actually playing the tabletop game. While the game’s mechanics and turn structure aren’t identical to 5th Edition D&D, it successfully recreates the atmosphere of a D&D campaign.
2) Sunderfolk

Platform(s): PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch (requires smartphone app to play)
Price: $49.99
Sunderfolk is a cooperative role-playing game inspired by tabletop experiences. It blends strategic, party-based combat with a virtual board game feel. What’s unique is that only one person needs to own the game for friends to play together, either in the same room or online. During the game, your phone acts as your controller, guide, and character sheet, leading you through your chosen adventure.
Released earlier this year, Sunderfolk is a new tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) that’s been getting rave reviews, with a “Very Positive” rating on Steam. It blends turn-based combat, a classic fantasy setting, and a visual style reminiscent of traditional Dungeons & Dragons, but with a fresh rule system that’s easy to learn as you go. Best of all, you can try the first four missions for free, making it a great option to test out with your D&D group before purchasing the full game.
1) Baldur’s Gate 3

Platform(s): PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S
Price: $59.99
Baldur’s Gate 3 has quickly become a favorite for both longtime Dungeons & Dragons players and those new to the game. It successfully brings the experience of tabletop role-playing to life with stunning visuals and enjoyable gameplay. While based on the 5th edition rules, the game adapts them for a smoother, more streamlined experience. Plus, you have complete freedom to create and customize your own unique character, from their class to all their details.
With the recent addition of crossplay co-op, Baldur’s Gate 3 is now an incredible way to experience a D&D adventure with friends online. The game offers impactful choices, a wide variety of character classes, and is a truly exceptional co-op RPG for fans of D&D.
