5 Darkest Moments From Hannibal We Still Can’t Believe Got Past The TV Censors

Hannibal was a particularly dark and unsettling TV show, fitting for a prequel to The Silence of the Lambs. The series focused on Hannibal Lecter psychologically manipulating FBI agent Will Graham while seemingly assisting with criminal investigations. This tension was heightened by the fact that Hannibal was secretly the Chesapeake Ripper, a horrifying serial killer who committed cannibalism.

As a big fan of Hannibal, I always found it amazing how much the show got away with, especially considering it aired on NBC. You’d think a broadcast network would have stricter rules about what you can show, but Hannibal really pushed things! They only pulled one episode – and even that was at the creator’s request because the storyline, about a woman manipulating kids into killing their families, was deemed too sensitive so soon after the Sandy Hook tragedy. Beyond that, the show was incredibly dark and disturbing, and I was constantly surprised by how far they were allowed to go with it.

5) A Man Escapes From a Human Mural

As a huge fan of Hannibal, one scene that really stuck with me is the start of the “Sakizuke” episode in season two. The previous episode ended with this shocking image of a man sewn into a mural made of other people – already pretty intense for TV, honestly. But what happened next? It was even more disturbing, and I remember being completely floored.

The man’s escape was brutal and visually shocking. He had to tear his way out of the mural he was stitched into, and the scene depicted this in graphic detail. While not the most disturbing moment, it was quite bloody and showed the man in obvious pain, making it an unsettling and somewhat excessive scene.

4) Slitting Abigail’s Throat In Front of Will

Wow, the finale of Hannibal season two… that was something else. It was easily the most brutal episode of the show. Seeing Hannibal finally unmasked was shocking enough, but the real gut punch was watching the entire FBI team realize they’d been played – and that Dr. Lecter wasn’t one of them, but a monster all along. It was just incredibly violent and disturbing.

The episode reaches a shocking climax with multiple violent acts: Hannibal threatens Crawford with a gun, Bloom falls from a window, and Will is stabbed. But the most unsettling moment is when Hannibal lures Abigail close, then brutally slits her throat while Will can only watch in horror. The entire episode was exceptionally violent, pushing the boundaries of what’s typically shown on television, and the graphic nature of these events, particularly Abigail’s murder, leaves a lasting and disturbing impression on viewers.

3) The Torture of Abel Gideon

As a huge fan of Hannibal, the story of Abel Gideon really stuck with me – it’s one of the most unsettling arcs in the whole series, especially how it ended. It was horrifying enough that Hannibal kidnapped Gideon and cut off his leg, but then to serve it to him at a dinner party? And the fact that Gideon, after initially fighting it, actually ate a portion of it… it’s just deeply disturbing and unforgettable. It’s a scene that really gets under your skin.

The storyline is deeply unsettling, making Gideon’s eventual death almost a relief. It’s shocking that NBC permitted such graphic content, including cannibalism – a scene even harder to watch than it was to describe. This is especially ironic given that NBC previously asked for a violent scene involving Gideon killing someone to be made less graphic back in Season 1.

2) Hannibal Saws Open Will’s Head While Will Is Awake

Season 3 featured a shockingly graphic scene where Hannibal seemingly cuts open Will’s head, intending to consume his brain. While viewers still discuss the purpose of this intense moment – as Will ends up with just a surface wound – it’s widely considered one of the most unsettling and memorable interactions between Hannibal and Will throughout the show.

Like a few other intense moments in the show, this scene tested the limits of what NBC would allow in terms of violence and disturbing imagery. Surprisingly, the network let it air. However, by the third season, the show had already featured several graphic scenes, and at least Hannibal refrains from actually consuming Will’s brain.

1) Mason Feeds His Own Face To Dogs

Mason was unsettling from the start, but the moment when Hannibal forces him to let dogs eat his face is particularly horrifying. It’s a deeply disturbing and graphic scene that stays with you long after you’ve seen it.

While it’s understandable that viewers might feel better knowing Hannibal was targeting a child molester, the scene still contained a significant amount of gore, violence, and drug use – particularly since Mason was tripping on psychedelics – which is unusual for a network TV show.
