5 DC Heroes Who Should Have Sidekicks

Sidekicks are a cornerstone of superhero stories. Ever since Robin appeared shortly after Batman, they’ve been a staple of comics. Characters like Kid Flash and Squire followed, each with their own unique backstory and motivations. Sidekicks are particularly important to DC Comics, which often emphasizes the idea of heroes passing on their legacy. Many iconic characters began as sidekicks before becoming heroes in their own right, and some even became more famous than their mentors.

Growing up reading DC comics, I’ve noticed almost all the big heroes had a sidekick at some point – Batman really started it all, and most of the Justice League followed. It’s cool to see a hero ‘pay it forward,’ showing they’ve become established enough to train the next generation. But surprisingly, some heroes haven’t had a sidekick, even though it could be great for them! I’ve been thinking about which heroes would make amazing mentors, and today I want to share five who I think really should take on a young protégé. Let’s talk about potential sidekicks!

5) Martian Manhunter

J’onn has been a great uncle to Miss Martian, helping her adjust to life on Earth, but it’s unfortunate they never teamed up as crime fighters. J’onn is a brilliant strategist and a deeply empathetic figure – truly the heart of the Justice League. He consistently leads with courage, even while still feeling like an outsider. Giving J’onn a sidekick would be a fantastic way for him to feel more connected to Earth. As someone who has always observed humanity from a distance, working with a student – whether human or an alien trying to fit in – could highlight J’onn’s best qualities and demonstrate why people admire and rely on him.

4) Red Hood

Jason Todd briefly had a partner named Scarlet, but she didn’t stick around for long. He has the potential to be a great mentor, and his upcoming leadership of the Teen Titans will allow him to do just that. He wants to help young heroes learn from his mistakes – specifically, how to avoid the path that led to his own downfall and a turn to villainy. This would be a fantastic way to develop his character, which often feels stuck repeating the same patterns. Beyond that, a sidekick could offer Jason a much-needed source of positivity. Just as Robin often brought out the best in Batman, a cheerful, optimistic sidekick might be exactly what Jason needs to move past his troubled history.

3) John Constantine

Similar to the Red Hood, Constantine is a character who thrives when challenged and reluctantly pulled into the light. I believe giving Constantine a sidekick would be hilarious. He strikes me as someone who’d actively dislike children and anyone who threatens his complicated, morally ambiguous persona. While some might worry a sidekick would clash with Constantine’s darker stories, I think a young, hopeful magic-user learning the ropes alongside—and even looking up to—Constantine offers tons of interesting possibilities. And, honestly, it would just be really funny.

2) Starfire

Starfire is ready to step out of the team and prove she can thrive as an independent hero, and taking on a sidekick is the perfect way to do it. She needs more stories focused on her own experiences, and what better way to explore that than by mentoring someone else? We’ve seen Starfire grow into a strong, confident hero, and it would be amazing to see her pass that on by guiding a lost newcomer who’s trying to find their place. It’s time for Starfire to share everything she’s learned, and a sidekick would be the ideal student.

1) Booster Gold

Booster Gold began as a self-centered individual chasing wealth and recognition, but he’s grown into one of DC’s most heroic and selfless figures. He’s funny, offers valuable life lessons, and has a knack for time travel, making him an ideal mentor for a young hero. While he might not be a natural teacher at first, the idea of Booster guiding an initially arrogant but good-hearted hero to understand that fame isn’t everything would perfectly demonstrate his own personal growth. Booster has proven himself as a true hero, but he’s still known for his earlier, more boastful days. Taking on a sidekick would be a fantastic way to solidify his maturity and show how much he’s changed.
