Star Trek debuted on TV in 1966 and quickly grew into a large franchise with movies, games, and more. The first Star Trek game came out in 1971, and many followed, each adding new aliens, technology, and stories to the universe. Occasionally, a game would feature a particularly powerful weapon that later appeared in the TV shows or films. Here are five of the deadliest weapons that originated in Star Trek games, presented in no specific order.
1) Tetryon Gatling Gun

Released in 2003, Star Trek: Elite Force II is a first-person shooter and a continuation of the story from Star Trek: Voyager – Elite Force. The game offers 15 different weapons, each with two ways to fire. The primary fire mode provides consistent, lower-damage output, while the secondary mode uses more ammunition but delivers slower, more powerful shots. The most devastating weapon is the Klingon Tetryon Gatling Gun. This energy weapon can continuously fire rapidly recharging energy chambers, or it can launch a powerful tetryon pulse as an energy grenade. It’s incredibly effective against shields and enemies – it is a Klingon Gatling Gun, after all.
2) Positron Torpedoes

Most Star Trek fans are familiar with photon torpedoes, but they aren’t the only powerful weapon used by starships. The game Star Trek: Bridge Commander introduced positron torpedoes, which are fired from ships built by a combination of Kessok and Cardassian technology. These torpedoes have a much longer range than standard weapons and combine Cardassian disruptor technology with positronic weaponry. Essentially, they’re a more powerful version of quantum torpedoes, and so far have only appeared within the game. While details on their use are limited, it’s possible these positron torpedoes could be featured in future Star Trek stories.
3) Phased Plasma Torpedoes

Plasma torpedoes are already powerful weapons, but adding a phasing ability makes them even more dangerous. Introduced in the game Star Trek: Bridge Commander, phased plasma torpedoes can pass through enemy energy shields before exploding. This is especially effective because it bypasses shields entirely, allowing the torpedo to hit the starship’s hull directly. In the game, the USS Sovereign was awarded 20 of these phased plasma torpedoes for defending Starbase 12 from a large Cardassian/Kessok attack, though they hadn’t had a chance to use them yet.
4) Protomatter Bombs

Protomatter was first seen in the Star Trek movies as the core of the Genesis Device, but it proved too unstable to work properly. It’s an extremely dangerous substance, and in the Star Trek Online game, the Tzenkethi race created Protomatter Bombs capable of completely destroying all life on a planet. These bombs could be launched from a great distance, making them one of the deadliest weapons ever featured in a Star Trek video game. Earlier, in the game Star Trek: Invasion, Protomatter Missiles were used, but they targeted spaceships instead of entire planets.
5) Shock Blade

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Fallen is a 2000 video game where you play as one of the main characters from the show, completing levels based on a series of novels set on Deep Space Nine. It’s a third-person shooter with a variety of weapons, and one of the coolest is the Shock Blade. This weapon is designed for fighting up close, but it can also shoot out a powerful energy blast at enemies from a distance, making it a really useful and deadly tool.
