Every year, a number of popular, fan-driven movies tend to receive Oscar nominations, and 2025 looks to continue that trend. For a long time, it was thought that only serious, critically acclaimed films won major awards. However, in the last ten years, movies loved by fans have become more prominent at the Oscars. Films like Get Out (horror) and Black Panther (superhero) were even nominated for Best Picture, and that’s not counting the many acting awards and technical honors for things like visual effects and costumes. We expect to see several fan-favorite films in the running for major awards again this year.
Here’s a preview of the 2025 movies aimed at dedicated fans – from horror hits to large-scale fantasy adventures – that could be nominated for Oscars.
5) Weapons

The movie Weapons was a surprise hit that left audiences stunned. While the trailers suggested a story about a child abduction, director Zach Cregger delivered something much more complex and unexpected. The film took several surprising turns, and its originality deserves recognition – Cregger should definitely be considered for a Best Original Screenplay nomination.
Despite this, the film might still receive a few Oscar nominations. “Weapons” could potentially be nominated for Best Visual Effects, though it’s considered a long shot. Additionally, Amy Madigan’s performance as Gladys, Alex’s aunt, could earn her a Best Supporting Actress nomination, especially given her pivotal role in the film’s ending.
4) Superman

As a huge movie fan, I’ve noticed superhero films are pretty much guaranteed to snag a bunch of those technical Oscars – things like Visual Effects, costumes, and sound design. Looking at the big three from this year, though, I really think Superman has the strongest chance of racking up nominations. Fantastic Four will likely get some recognition in the technical categories, and honestly, Thunderbolts deserves to be in the conversation when it comes to screenplay. But Superman? That film was a genuine masterpiece, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it nominated in nearly every technical category.
Despite this, there’s a possibility that Superman could earn a major award nomination, potentially for James Gunn as Best Director. While a Best Picture nomination for the DC Universe would be great, Gunn is currently the most likely candidate for any superhero film to receive a significant nomination this year.
3) Sinners

This year, Sinners is a very strong contender for a Best Picture nomination, and it’s highly likely to be nominated. In fact, the film could receive nominations in almost all of the major categories. Beyond Best Picture, Ryan Coogler deserves consideration for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for his work on the movie.
The musical score for Sinners deserves recognition, though it will likely face strong competition from Wicked: For Good. Michael B. Jordan could also be nominated for Best Actor, thanks to his performance playing two distinct lead characters. With potential nominations for Visual Effects, Production Design, and Costumes/Makeup as well, Sinners could end up with more nominations than any other fan-based film in 2025.
2) Wicked: For Good

Everyone expects Wicked: For Life to lead the Oscars this year with the most nominations of any film. It’s almost certain to be nominated for Best Picture, Best Director (John M. Chu), Best Actress (Cynthia Erivo), and Best Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande), and it will likely win several awards for its technical achievements as well.
The movie Wicked: For Life is expected to be nominated for several Oscars, including Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. While the first film only won two awards, the sequel’s more complex and dramatic story could lead to more wins this time.
1) Frankenstein

Guillermo del Toro is likely to be nominated for Best Director, and his film Frankenstein could also be up for Best Picture. However, the film’s best chance of winning a major award is probably in the Best Supporting Actor category, thanks to Jacob Elordi’s captivating performance as the Creature – he consistently stole the show whenever he was on screen.
As a huge film fan, I’m predicting Frankenstein is going to dominate the technical categories this year. I think it’s almost certain to win Best Production Design, and it’s very likely to take home both Best Costumes and Best Makeup, potentially beating out Wicked: For Life. Plus, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. And while it’s a long shot, I’m really hoping Oscar Isaac gets a Best Actor nod for his amazing portrayal of Victor Frankenstein.
