5 Great DC Black Label Comics Every Fan Must Read

You’re really missing out if you haven’t checked out DC Comics’ Black Label! Launched in 2018, this imprint publishes stories featuring DC’s most famous characters, but geared towards mature readers. Since the release of titles like Batman: Damned, DC has put out a ton of incredible adult-focused comics. Whether you’re into Batman turning into a werewolf or a story about the Rogues pulling off one last heist, Black Label has something for every fan.

So, which DC Black Label comics are truly worth reading? It’s tough to say, as everyone has different preferences. I’ve read a lot of these books and considered this question carefully, knowing my tastes are a bit unusual. But I’ve tried to be objective and pick out the most enjoyable ones. Here are 5 DC Black Label books you should definitely check out.

5. Plastic Man No More!

Christopher Cantwell, Alex Lins, and Jacob Edgar have created a surprisingly emotional Black Label story, and it features the often-comedic Plastic Man. After being injured during a Justice League mission, Eel O’Brien faces a rapidly deteriorating condition. The story follows his desperate search for a cure and his attempts to reconcile with his family. This book is a powerful combination of intense body horror and heartfelt drama, offering a surprisingly complex and moving portrayal of Plastic Man.

4. Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham

DC Black Label features many Batman stories, but one of the truly outstanding ones is Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham by Rafael Grampá. The story takes place in a different version of Gotham City, where crime is so rampant that Batman abandons his Bruce Wayne identity to dedicate himself entirely to fighting criminals. However, a mysterious conspiracy called the Stadtgeist appears, revealing hidden truths about Bruce’s past. The final issue is still upcoming, but it promises to be a satisfying conclusion.

3. Peacemaker Tries Hard!

If you enjoyed the Peacemaker series, you really should read Peacemaker Tries Hard! by Kyle Starks and Steve Pugh. Although it doesn’t take place in the same universe as James Gunn’s Peacemaker, you can definitely see the inspiration. The story follows Peacemaker on a cross-country DC Universe adventure to save his dog from the Brain and Monsieur Mallah. It’s a hilarious and smart comic packed with obscure DC Comics references – even more than Peacemaker has helmets! While it’s not officially part of James Gunn’s DC Universe, it’s a fantastic read if you’re looking for something with a similar vibe.

2. Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum

The new DC Black Label book, Superman: The Kryptonite Spectrum, has quickly become a standout title. Written by W. Maxwell Prince (of Ice Cream Man) and illustrated by Martín Morazzo, the story starts with an intriguing premise: Superman discovers different types of kryptonite and tests them on himself. However, the narrative quickly evolves into a surprisingly complex and moving exploration of themes like belonging, family, and how communities develop. As a big Superman fan, I highly recommend this book.

1. Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons

When it comes to DC Black Label books, Wonder Woman Historia: The Amazons consistently receives outstanding reviews. Written by Kelly Sue DeConnick with art by Phil Jimenez, Gene Ha, and Nicola Scott, this epic story retells the origins, history, and mythology of the Amazons, leading up to Wonder Woman’s birth. Many consider it the best reimagining of the Amazons in decades, and it even inspired Kelly Thompson’s work on Absolute Wonder Woman. Even if you’re not usually a Wonder Woman fan, this book could easily change your mind.
