5 Great DC Comics Couples Nobody Talks About

DC Comics is known for its memorable couples, like Superman and Lois Lane and Green Arrow and Black Canary. Compared to many relationships in Marvel Comics, DC couples generally have healthier, more enduring connections. These pairings have driven many of DC’s most compelling stories and helped shape its characters over the years.

Despite being truly compelling, many fantastic relationships in DC Comics haven’t gotten the recognition they deserve. These pairings often involve characters who are themselves overlooked, but even if they aren’t as well-known as other couples, they’re deeply touching and worth celebrating. Here are some of the best DC relationships that deserve more focus.

5) Thunder and Grace Choi

Anissa Pierce, known as Thunder, is the daughter of the hero Black Lightning. Grace Choi is a hero with Amazonian ancestry. They first met as members of the superhero team, the Outsiders, and quickly developed a romantic connection. Both Thunder and Grace are strong-willed and fiercely independent, but they’ve always supported each other. Their strong emotional bond deepened after they married. Sadly, DC Comics abruptly ended their relationship in 2024 without explanation, leaving many fans disappointed. Hopefully, these two determined heroes will find a way to resolve their differences and get back together.

4) Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl

Garth Ranzz (Lightning Lad) and Irma Ardeen (Saturn Girl), two original members of the Legion of Superheroes, became a couple while fighting crime together. Their romance blossomed after Lightning Lad was brought back to life, having previously sacrificed himself to save Saturn Girl. They enjoyed a long and happy relationship, eventually marrying and having two sons, Graym and Garridan. Sadly, their family faced tragedy when Garridan was kidnapped and transformed into Validus, a powerful villain associated with Darkseid and the Fatal Five. Despite their history being altered by DC Comics’ various reboots, Lightning Lad and Saturn Girl remained one of the most stable and enduring couples within the Legion, and fans hope to see them reunited again.

3) Jimmy Olsen and Silver Banshee

Jimmy Olsen, Superman’s close friend, has a knack for attracting interesting women. Currently, his most significant relationship is with Siobhan Smythe, also known as the Silver Banshee – a former Superman villain. They met after she was released from prison and quickly connected. Surprisingly, Jimmy continued to care for her even after learning about her villainous past. His love has actually been a key part of Silver Banshee’s journey to become a better person. Whenever she struggles and risks returning to her old ways, Jimmy is always there to help her. Despite seeming like an unlikely pair, their relationship is genuinely sweet and demonstrates that anyone is capable of change with the right support.

2) The Brain and Monsieur Mallah

It’s uniquely DC Comics where you find a loving gay couple consisting of a brain in a jar and a talking gorilla! The Brain and Monsieur Mallah, French supervillains and founding members of the Brotherhood of Evil, are longtime enemies of the Doom Patrol. What started as a criminal partnership eventually became a confirmed romantic relationship. The Brain boosted a regular gorilla’s intelligence to genius-level, creating Mallah, and together they’ve schemed to conquer the world. Despite being villains with vastly different forms, the Brain and Mallah share a genuine and deep affection, finding completeness only in each other’s company and having many funny and touching moments together.

1) Animal Man and Ellen Frazier

Animal Man and his wife, Ellen Frazier, are a surprisingly strong and often-overlooked couple in the DC Universe. While Buddy Baker (Animal Man) fights crime, Ellen supports him, even though she sometimes wishes for a simpler life. She’s fiercely protective of their children, Cliff and Maxine, and their whole family will do anything to keep each other safe. Their bond is so strong that when Ellen and Cliff were tragically killed, Animal Man took the extraordinary step of confronting the writer, Grant Morrison, and demanding they be brought back to life – and Morrison did! This couple remains one of the most stable and loving in DC Comics.
