Though primarily a gothic horror, Crimson Peak has a fantastical quality that lets it creatively blend genres. The story follows Edith, who marries the alluring Sir Thomas Sharpe and moves with him to his isolated mansion in the English countryside. There, she begins to communicate with ghosts and tries to uncover the secrets behind the haunting visions plaguing her new home. However, appearances are deceiving, and Edith discovers the true monsters might be those closest to her. It’s a shame Crimson Peak didn’t receive more recognition, as it’s a beautiful and compelling film. It’s a love story, a ghost story, and an exploration of how the past impacts the present, all while questioning how much we’d give up for a chance at happiness. The acting, particularly from Jessica Chastain and Tom Hiddleston, is phenomenal, and like all of Guillermo del Toro’s work, it’s both deeply unsettling and emotionally resonant – a truly iconic film.
