5 Great Superman Moments That Defined The ’20s (So Far)

Superman’s popularity has surprisingly soared in the 2020s. The previous decade, the 2010s, was uneven for fans, with some storylines being strong while others felt inconsistent or disappointing. While there were bright spots, it wasn’t a particularly good period overall. However, the 2020s have been a turning point. After a rocky start, things dramatically improved in 2021, and we’ve since seen some of the most exciting and well-received Superman stories ever.

Superman has been incredibly popular for several years, and that popularity continues to grow. The 2025 Superman movie boosted the character’s appeal to new heights, and the comics have successfully attracted a wider audience. The past few years have given us some truly memorable Superman moments, and with four more years left in the 2020s, there’s still plenty more to come.

5) Jon Kent becomes Superman

Many fans disliked the decision to age up Jon Kent during Brian Michael Bendis’s run on the Superman comics, especially since that run wasn’t popular overall. However, that storyline ultimately led to a highlight of recent Superman comics: Jon Kent becoming Superman. When his father’s powers began to diminish, Jon stepped up to protect the Earth, officially taking on the mantle in Superman: Son of Kal-El #1. While fans enjoyed Jon as a young character, watching him mature into a hero over the past six years has been a major strength of the Superman books, and he’s proven to be an excellent Superman.

4) Absolute Superman

DC’s Absolute Universe has been a fantastic success, and Absolute Superman is a standout title, quickly becoming a highlight for Superman fans this decade. Similar to the Absolute Batman and Wonder Woman editions, this series has captivated readers with a fresh take on Superman, set in a world shaped by Darkseid. From the start, the creative team, led by Jason Aaron and Rafa Sandoval, has consistently delivered a compelling Superman story, and it continues to improve. Absolute Superman is a real gem, and fans are hoping it continues for many years to come.

3) Superman and the Authority

Grant Morrison is known for their incredible work on Superman, most notably the critically acclaimed All-Star Superman. Having grown up with the character (as detailed in their book SuperGods), it felt fitting that their last major comic book project would center on the Man of Steel. Their miniseries, Superman and the Authority, created with artists Mikel Janin, Talent Foreman, and Fico Ossio, launched a fresh direction for Superman and introduced a new version of the Authority team. Though it doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves, it’s considered a standout achievement for the character in recent years.

2) Joshua Williamson on Superman

Joshua Williamson quickly became a popular writer at DC Comics with his work on The Flash, but he wasn’t necessarily a fan favorite right away. So, when he took over Superman (Vol. 6), readers were uncertain what to expect. However, over the past three years, he’s delivered a near-perfect run. He’s crafted one of the best Superman/Lex Luthor storylines in recent memory, consistently produced compelling stories, and significantly contributed to the success of DC K.O. through numerous tie-in issues and storyline development within Superman. His work on the title has been exceptional, and fans hope he continues writing it for many years to come.

1) “Warworld Saga”

The “Warworld Saga” marked a high point for Superman. When Phillip Kennedy Johnson took over the Action Comics and Superman (Vol. 5) titles – which eventually transitioned into Superman: Son of Kal-El – he launched this epic story. Building on the events of Superman and the Authority, the saga followed Superman and a team of heroes to Warworld to defeat Mongul. Spanning a year and a half in Action Comics, the story was visually stunning thanks to artists like Daniel Sampere, Riccardo Federici, Dale Eaglesham, Fico Ossio, and others, and showcased PKJ’s exceptional writing. While his entire run on Action Comics was impressive, “Warworld Saga” truly stood out as something special.
