The Teen Titans are a legendary superhero team from DC Comics, known for bringing together young heroes and former sidekicks eager to prove themselves. While the team’s lineup has changed a lot over the years – often including popular heroes like Robin, Raven, Beast Boy, Starfire, and Cyborg – not every Titan gets the spotlight they deserve. These lesser-known members possess unique abilities, compelling personalities, and stories that DC Comics writers and fans should explore more often.
I’ve been thinking about the Teen Titans, and there are so many awesome members who haven’t gotten the recognition they deserve. Whether they were written out of storylines with all the universe reboots, or just decided to leave the team, they’ve been overlooked for way too long, and I want to shine a light on them!
5) Red Devil

Eddie Bloomberg, who goes by Kid Devil (and later Red Devil), started as a teenage superhero sidekick to Blue Devil. He originally fought crime using a special suit and a trident, but he later gained real demonic powers after making a deal with a powerful being named Neron. This transformation gave him super strength, the ability to heal quickly, breathe fire, and fly. He was a long-time member of the Teen Titans. Tragically, he once gave his life to save his friends from a nuclear explosion, but he was eventually brought back. More recently, he assisted the Flash Family in fighting an alien threat called the Fraction.
4) Argent

Toni Monetti, known as Argent, is a hero with a unique background – she’s a hybrid of human and alien with silver skin. For many years, she was a dedicated member of the Teen Titans. Argent can create objects and shapes out of pure energy, giving her powers similar to Green Lantern and making her one of the team’s most adaptable heroes. She was part of an early version of the Teen Titans, alongside heroes like Atom and Hot Spot, but that team didn’t last long. Despite this, Argent continued as a key member of the main Teen Titans group. Even though she’s a loyal, powerful, and funny hero, Argent has been largely overlooked and hasn’t appeared in a major story for a long time.
3) Red Star

Leonid Kovar gained incredible superpowers – super strength, flight, and energy projection – after being exposed to radiation from an alien spaceship. He became Russia’s first superhero, and at first, fought for the Soviet Union. However, when his country let him down, he joined the Teen Titans. Originally known as Starfire, he changed his name to Red Star because another hero already used that name. Red Star developed strong bonds with his teammates Pantha and Baby Wildebeest, who became like family to him. After the tragic deaths of Pantha and Baby Wildebeest at the hands of Superboy-Prime, Red Star returned to Russia to protect it as its main hero. Despite the Cold War tensions, Red Star represented a symbol of hope and peace between Russia and the United States during his time with the Teen Titans.
2) Flamebird

Bette Kane is Batwoman’s cousin and a frequent partner, having fought crime under several names like Batgirl, Hawkfire, and Flamebird. Originally, in older DC Comics stories, she was even the first Batgirl before Barbara Gordon. While that history was later changed, Flamebird remains an important ally to Batwoman and Nightwing. She’s also been a dedicated member of the Teen Titans, including the West Coast team. Despite a significant, though often forgotten, role in DC Comics, Flamebird is a consistently valuable, yet underrated, hero within both the Bat-Family and the Teen Titans.
1) Guardian

Mal Duncan, known as the Guardian, holds a significant place in DC Comics as one of the earliest Black superheroes. He became a Teen Titan after assisting the team in taking down a hate group. Initially, Mal didn’t have any superpowers, but that changed when he was fatally injured in an explosion and met the Grim Reaper. In a bizarre turn of events, he defeated the Reaper in a boxing match and survived! This encounter gifted him with an angelic trumpet capable of creating portals and unleashing powerful sonic attacks, which he used for years as the hero Herald. After losing the trumpet, Mal largely stepped back from superhero life, though he occasionally returns as the shield-wielding Guardian. A courageous but self-doubting character, Mal is incredibly relatable and deserves more attention.
