The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been incredibly popular, but some removed scenes could have actually made its already great movies even better. Marvel often edits its films after they’re shot, cutting scenes for various reasons, and they rarely release extended or director’s cuts. While this approach makes business sense, many of these deleted scenes would have clarified plot points and enhanced the overall story.

Here are five deleted scenes from the Marvel Cinematic Universe that would have improved the films, ranging from plot-advancing moments to scenes that would have been amazing on the big screen.

5) Hulk “Eats the Bullet” in The Incredible Hulk

The first and only solo Hulk movie was released in 2008, the same year that Iron Man launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Incredible Hulk was the second MCU film, but it didn’t quite live up to the success of Iron Man. Edward Norton played Bruce Banner/The Hulk, but Mark Ruffalo took over the role in future films. Marvel requested one scene be cut from the final version. The movie concluded with Bruce Banner conducting experiments, ending on a shot of his glowing green eyes and a smile, suggesting he was learning to control the Hulk.

The filmmakers considered starting the movie with a very different opening. In this version, Bruce Banner would have traveled to the Arctic intending to end his life, unable to control the Hulk. He would have attempted suicide, but the Hulk would have intervened, catching the bullet and destroying the gun. Ultimately, this scene was cut because test audiences reacted negatively to the idea of Banner wanting to die at the beginning of the film. A casualty of this change was a hidden detail—an Easter egg showing Captain America frozen in the ice, foreshadowing his later appearance.

4) Loki’s Coronation in Thor: The Dark World

Many fans and filmmakers consider Thor: The Dark World to be one of the weakest entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The production was troubled, starting with director Patty Jenkins leaving and being replaced by Alan Taylor, who later described working on the film as a terrible experience. The result was a confused movie that didn’t fully develop its villain, Malekith, making him one of the least memorable in the MCU.

After Wanda Maximoff gave Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor disturbing visions, the Avengers split up to find a solution. Thor sought to understand his vision by consulting with his friend, Erik Selvig.

This discovery brought Thor and Erik to the Norn Cave, a scene that Marvel ultimately cut from the final movie. The deleted scene showed Thor being possessed, during which the Norn warned that the stone would lure them with its power and lead to their doom. Tony Stark’s death was a truly shocking moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing the climactic battle of Avengers: Endgame to a somber close and demonstrating that even heroes can make the ultimate sacrifice. Iron Man’s selfless act saved the world, highlighting his importance as the MCU’s original hero. Interestingly, a deleted scene existed that could have made his death even more emotionally impactful.

Following Iron Man’s death in the movie, a scene was filmed but ultimately cut where Tony Stark appeared in the Soul World – the same ethereal realm Thanos used with Gamora. There, he met a woman who was revealed to be an adult version of his daughter, Morgan. Actress Katherine Langford played Morgan, and she reassured Tony that everything would be alright, thanking him for being her father. While a touching farewell, this scene didn’t make the final cut of the film.

1) Hela Kills Odin in Thor: Ragnarok

A particularly sad scene was cut from Thor: Ragnarok. Director Taika Waititi felt it was too upsetting as originally filmed. The initial version didn’t show Loki and Thor finding Odin peacefully watching the ocean. Instead, it depicted Odin praising his sons before fading away, which then allowed Hela to appear. The filmmakers ultimately decided to soften this moment before the final cut of the movie.

A deleted scene revealed Thor and Loki discovering a drunken Odin in a New York City alley. He warned them about the coming of Ragnarok, and then Hela appeared. The scene clarified that Hela didn’t return because Odin died, but while he was still alive. She then killed Odin right before Thor and Loki, before departing for Asgard where she caused widespread destruction. Killing Odin herself would have been a dramatically impactful moment and could have elevated the film even further within the MCU.
