Numerous sci-fi shows have achieved this kind of widespread and enduring success, earning a strong reputation within both the genre and the broader television landscape.

While plenty of science fiction series do well, it’s rare for one to be truly exceptional. But a few multi-season shows manage to be consistently great, year after year. The core idea, the way the show was structured, and how they pulled off the sci-fi concepts were all top-notch. It’s quickly become one of my favorite sci-fi shows of the last few years. It didn’t always get the viewership it deserved, but trust me, it’s a fantastic show from beginning to end.

2) Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994)

As a sci-fi fan, I’ve always believed a single show truly defines each generation, and for the late 80s and 90s, that show was undoubtedly Star Trek: The Next Generation. It wasn’t just a reboot of the original; it felt like a seamless, natural step forward, building on all the groundbreaking ideas that came before. Over seven seasons and 178 episodes, we followed the adventures of the crew aboard the Starship Enterprise-D, and honestly, it changed everything.

While a few episodes of The Next Generation weren’t as strong as others, the show consistently maintained a high quality throughout its long run. It skillfully blended self-contained stories with ongoing plotlines, contributing to its immense popularity and solidifying its place as a classic sci-fi series. Like many beloved shows, The Next Generation remained consistently good from start to finish – a remarkable achievement given how many episodes it produced.

1) Orphan Black (2013-2017)

I’m a bit obsessed with sci-fi, and honestly, Orphan Black doesn’t get the love it deserves. It’s often mentioned as one of the best shows of the 2000s, and for good reason! Tatiana Maslany is incredible – she plays a woman who finds out she’s one of many clones, and she really becomes each of them. The show has this awesome, twisty sci-fi plot, and everyone involved delivers amazing performances. It’s a real standout.

The strongest episodes of Orphan Black are truly exceptional science fiction, but the show consistently delivers quality – there aren’t any truly weak installments. The story is consistently gripping, and watching the characters develop is a real pleasure. For a sci-fi series that maintains a high level of quality throughout its run, Orphan Black is among the very best.
