5 More TV Show Characters Who Disappeared With No Explanation

Finishing a TV series is a real accomplishment, especially considering how quickly shows like Game of Thrones eliminate characters. Often considered the biggest show of the 21st century, Game of Thrones is notorious for killing off key players—Ned Stark, for example, drives the plot in Season 1 as he investigates the Lannisters after his friend, Robert Baratheon, dies, but doesn’t even make it to the end of the season. While many major characters meet tragic ends, Game of Thrones at least gives them fitting farewells, something not all TV shows bother to do for their actors.

It’s bad enough for a TV character to die, but being completely forgotten is even worse. Writers often sideline characters, thinking they might have a use for them later. However, time passes – weeks turn into years – and eventually, those characters just fade away. Here are five more TV characters who vanished without any explanation.

5) Chuck Cunningham (Happy Days)

Family life is rarely simple, and while the Cunninghams on Happy Days generally faced challenges as a united front, supporting each other through thick and thin, one member mysteriously disappeared. Chuck Cunningham, Richie and Joanie’s older brother, was simply written off the show after the second season. This was made strikingly clear in the series finale, where Howard Cunningham expressed pride in only Richie and Joanie, completely leaving Chuck out of the picture.

4) Kendra Mason (Degrassi: The Next Generation)

I always felt Spinner was pretty unfair to the younger kids on Degrassi: The Next Generation. He teased J.T. for being a bit of a nerd, but his problem with Toby was way worse – it was just because Toby was dating his sister, Kendra! They had a lot of ups and downs in their relationship, and honestly, it was kind of disappointing how their breakup just happened off-screen. Then, Kendra just disappeared from school altogether, which was sad. It really bothered me that she wasn’t even at Spinner’s wedding, especially since other family members were there. It felt like a really cold thing to do.

3) Mr. Turner (Boy Meets World)

Everyone always talks about Mr. Feeny as the one who really shaped Cory, Shawn, and Topanga, and he definitely did a lot! But I’ve always appreciated Mr. Turner too. He taught them valuable lessons in his own unique way. I remember being so worried when he was in that motorcycle accident in Season 4, but thankfully they let us know he’d be okay. It was a real shame to see him disappear from the show after that, though. I was so thrilled when he showed up in Girl Meets World! It was awesome to see him inspiring a whole new generation, proving to Riley and Maya that learning could actually be fun.

2) Abby Day (New Girl)

Jess Day, the main character in New Girl, is someone who prefers order, making it ironic that she lives with three messy guys. However, things change when her sister, Abby, visits in Season 3. Jess gets upset that her friends enjoy spending time with Abby’s wild personality and struggles to accept that Abby might be making positive changes. Sadly, New Girl never follows up on Abby’s story, and she isn’t mentioned again after returning to Oregon – she doesn’t even show up at Jess and Nick’s wedding.

1) Mandy Hampton (The West Wing)

Working in any office can be complicated, but things are especially intense when that office is the White House. In the first season of The West Wing, political consultant Mandy Hampton takes a comfortable job working for President Bartlet and quickly demonstrates her abilities. However, her position gradually becomes less important throughout the season. By season two, she’s completely gone, and the show never explains whether she was fired or left voluntarily.
