5 Most Powerful Harry Potter Wizards Not in the Movies

Most fans aren’t thrilled about a new Harry Potter TV series, especially since the movies are readily available to watch or buy. It feels unnecessary to retell the story of Harry and his friends battling evil. However, the movies couldn’t include everything from the books, meaning many important moments and characters were left out. For example, characters like Charlie Weasley, Ron’s brother, and Peeves, the mischievous poltergeist at Hogwarts, didn’t make it into the films.

Charlie and Peeves are fun characters who add a lot to the story, but they don’t play a major role in the Second Wizarding War, so it’s understandable why they were left out of the films. However, the characters on this list did have a significant impact. Here are five of the most powerful wizards from the Harry Potter books who didn’t make it into the movies.

5) Merlin

By the time Harry Potter arrives at Hogwarts, the famous wizard Merlin has been gone for centuries, so he doesn’t personally share tales of King Arthur and the medieval period. Despite this, Merlin’s legacy lives on through the Order of Merlin, a prestigious award given to Hogwarts’ most talented students. In the movies, Merlin is only briefly referenced – usually through jokes about his beard when characters are surprised.

4) Rodolphus Lestrange

Bellatrix Lestrange is a terrifying villain in the Harry Potter films, but we don’t learn much about her life outside of serving Voldemort. Some fans speculate she had a romantic relationship with him, secretly influencing his decisions. However, the books establish that Bellatrix was married to Rodolphus Lestrange, who was just as cruel and participated in the brutal torture of Alice and Frank Longbottom. Ultimately, Rodolphus receives his punishment and is imprisoned in Azkaban after the Second Wizarding War.

3) Marvolo Gaunt

The Harry Potter films include several flashbacks showing Voldemort’s past. These scenes usually depict him plotting at Hogwarts, researching Horcruxes, and sending people into the Chamber of Secrets. While these moments come from the books, one important character is left out: Marvolo Gaunt, Voldemort’s grandfather. As a descendant of Salazar Slytherin, Gaunt was a powerful wizard, but he’s most notable for owning the ring and locket that Voldemort later turned into Horcruxes.

2) Augusta Longbottom

Neville Longbottom consistently faces hardship. Orphaned at a young age, he struggles to prove himself at Hogwarts, as people don’t expect much from him given his family’s history. Fortunately, he has the unwavering support of his grandmother, Augusta Longbottom, who raised him and bravely fights against dark forces, including Death Eaters. She even joins the Battle of Hogwarts, standing proudly beside her grandson.

1) Andromeda Tonks

It’s easy to get lost in the complex family relationships within the Wizarding World, but one important connection is that Remus Lupin’s wife, Nymphadora Tonks, was the niece of Bellatrix Lestrange. Tonks’ mother, Andromeda, was Bellatrix’s younger sister, but she broke away from her family due to their dark beliefs. Despite this, Andromeda still possessed magical abilities, which she passed on to Tonks, who became a key member of the Order of the Phoenix. After Tonks and Lupin tragically died during the Battle of Hogwarts, Andromeda lovingly raised their son, Teddy, ensuring he grew into a good person.
