5 Most Underrated Movies of 2025 That You Might’ve Missed

In 2025, films like Minecraft, Lilo & Stitch, Zootopia 2, Sinners, Superman, and Wicked: For Good were huge box office successes and attracted dedicated fans. Other films, while excellent and highly entertaining, didn’t initially reach as wide an audience. They’re now hoping that positive reviews and availability on streaming services will help them find their audience and, in some cases, become financially successful – something they truly deserve.

While some films, like those starring Jack Quaid and the latest Marvel releases, have their followers, they didn’t quite live up to expectations and could have been even better.

5) Thunderbolts*

While Thunderbolts earned $382 million globally and is a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, it still doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Considering there were three MCU releases in 2025, this movie was a better candidate for success than others – Captain America: Brave New World, for example, which was quite unremarkable.

Even if you’ve stopped following the Marvel Cinematic Universe after films like Eternals, Thor: Love and Thunder, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and The Marvels, Thunderbolts is worth watching. The cast has fantastic chemistry, and the movie explores surprisingly deep themes like grief and learning to forgive yourself – topics we don’t often see in MCU films. Hopefully, this team will become a fan favorite when they appear in the next Avengers movie, as long as they don’t suffer the same fate as Taskmaster in this one.

4) Deep Cover

Sometimes you just need something uplifting, and that’s exactly what Deep Cover delivers. The movie features a fun story about three improv actors who unexpectedly use their skills to help the police in a risky situation.

The story is full of surprises, but the movie truly shines because of its clever writing and the fantastic connection between the three main actors. Bryce Dallas Howard is perfectly suited for this type of role, Orlando Bloom clearly enjoys playing a character different from his usual ones, and Nick Mohammed from Ted Lasso uses his naturally awkward style to great effect, adding to a story that’s both funny and suspenseful.

3) Novocaine

Okay, so Novocaine might not be Jack Quaid’s absolute best film from 2025, but honestly, it was a total turning point for him. That was the movie where he really showed everyone he could lead a film. And it wasn’t an easy ask, either! He had to convincingly play an action hero, nail the romantic scenes, and be funny enough to keep the whole thing from getting too dark and gritty. It was a really impressive performance, and I think it proved he could do it all.

Quaid is great in the film, but Amber Midthunder is equally impressive and provides fantastic chemistry. She’s proving herself to be a remarkably versatile rising star. Novocaine is the kind of fun, action-packed comedy that’s sure to find a dedicated audience and become a long-lasting favorite – it’s easy to enjoy and appeals to a wide range of viewers.

2) Ballerina

It’s surprising that Ballerina didn’t do well in theaters. The John Wick movies became increasingly successful, growing from a small, low-budget action film into a major summer blockbuster franchise. Despite John Wick appearing in Ballerina itself, it still failed to attract an audience.

Surprisingly, the film feels weakest when it tries to force John Wick into the story. Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro was a perfect fit to lead the franchise, and it’s disappointing we likely won’t see her character return. However, the movie definitely delivers the signature action sequences fans expect from the John Wick series – the entire second half is filled with impressively choreographed and thrilling fight scenes.

1) Companion

While roles in The Boys and Novocaine showed Jack Quaid’s ability to play a hero, Companion reinforces what Scream and The Hunger Games already suggested: he truly excels as a villain. However, the film’s strength isn’t solely due to his performance. The insightful commentary on artificial intelligence and the outstanding work of Sophie Thatcher are equally crucial, making it one of 2025’s most overlooked films.

With unexpected twists and a well-written script, Companion is a truly excellent film. It successfully combines different genres and delivers on its promises. It’s exciting to think about what director Drew Hancock will create in the future, as this was his first feature film.
