This week, five classic PlayStation 1 games are making a comeback on PS5, and one of them will also be available on PS4. Even better, PS Plus Premium subscribers will get one of these games for free starting tomorrow. Players on lower PS Plus tiers, or those without a subscription, will need to purchase the game from the PlayStation Store.
Okay, so this week is looking awesome for PS1 fans like me! First up, Time Crisis is coming to PS5 (and PS4!), and it’s even free if you’re a PlayStation Plus Premium member. Then tomorrow, May 19th, they’re dropping remakes of Myst and Riven, which is huge, and you can even play those in VR with the PS VR2! Finally, on May 22nd, they’re finishing off this wave of nostalgia with the Rugrats: Retro Rewind Collection – it’s got both Rugrats: Search for Reptar and Rugrats in Paris: The Movie in it. Seriously, my inner child is screaming!
Myst Remake
In 1993, Cyan created the adventure game Myst, which became incredibly popular and is considered one of the greatest games ever made. It was also the best-selling PC game of the 1990s. Now, after a 2020 remake, Myst is coming to PlayStation 5 and PS VR2 for $35 on the PlayStation Store.
Riven Remake
Cyan followed up their hit game Myst with Riven in 1997. While Riven didn’t achieve the same level of success or recognition, it was still a well-regarded game in its own right – it’s difficult to compare any game to a classic like Myst. In 2024, Cyan created a remake of Riven, and now that remake is coming to the PlayStation Store on the same platforms as the original, priced at $35 – just like Myst.
Time Crisis
Man, I’m so hyped! Remember Time Crisis? That awesome on-rails shooter from ’97? It kicked off a whole series, but we haven’t seen a new one in ages – since 2015, actually. But now it’s coming back! They’ve updated it with cool stuff like gyro aiming, and it’s hitting PS Plus Premium. If you’re not a subscriber, don’t worry, you can still snag it on the PS Store for ten bucks. I can’t wait to relive those arcade days!
Rugrats: Search for Reptar & Rugrats in Paris: The Movie
Released in 1998 by n-Space and THQ, Rugrats: Search for Reptar came out when the animated series was incredibly popular. As a PlayStation exclusive, the game received generally mixed reviews – typical for licensed games at the time – but it was a commercial success and ranked among the best-selling PlayStation games of that year.
The movie Rugrats in Paris: The Movie was released in 2000, and a video game based on the film followed. While it was received similarly to Rugrats: Search for Reptar, it didn’t sell quite as well.
I’m so excited! Both Rugrats: Search for Reptar and Rugrats: Studio Tour are coming back as part of the Rugrats: Retro Rewind Collection on May 22nd. We don’t know how much it’ll cost yet, but with six games included, I’m guessing it won’t be super cheap. Still, totally worth it to revisit these classics!
