Things haven’t been great over at Marvel lately, honestly. I was so hyped for the new Ultimate line, but it just didn’t stick the landing. The X-Men relaunch felt flat, Spider-Man didn’t really generate any excitement, and the Avengers… well, they basically failed right out of the gate. It feels like DC is on top for the first time in ages, and as a long-time Marvel fan, I’m struggling to find much to get excited about. 2026 is continuing some of the problems we saw in 2025, though there are a few books that are really shining. Still, the one thing giving me hope is the next big event, Armageddon, from Chip Zdarsky – it actually sounds really interesting and could be something special.
This new Marvel event has been brewing in the recent Captain America comics by Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti, and concluded in the excellent Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon. Following the events of One World Under Doom, the story appears to pit heroes against Red Hulk and a US government that’s once again creating super-soldiers. There’s a lot of buzz around this event, and many believe it could be what Marvel needs to regain its leading position. Here are five reasons to get excited about Armageddon, which looks like a return to classic Marvel storytelling.
5) Avengers Events Are Always a Blast

The story leading up to the ‘Armageddon’ event started in earlier comics featuring Captain America and Wolverine, but the main conflict now unfolds in ‘Avengers: Armageddon’. This is a major event focused on the Avengers team, and it’s a welcome return to form for Marvel. Avengers events have historically been very successful for the company – driving much of their success in the mid-2000s to early 2010s – and this new story looks set to be another excellent showcase for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the broader Marvel Universe.
4) Red Hulk Is Being Grown Into a Perfect New Villain

When Red Hulk first burst onto the scene, he was a huge deal – arguably the most exciting new villain Marvel had in years. Honestly, they fumbled him a bit after that initial splash, throwing him into the Avengers and trying to stretch the concept too thin. But the core idea – General Thunderbolt Ross with Hulk powers – was brilliant, and Marvel finally started to treat it that way with the One World Under Doom storyline. Since then, they’ve really elevated him. He’s become the leading figure representing the U.S. military in the postOWUD world and is central to everything leading up to Armageddon*. It feels like Marvel has finally found the right path for this character, and I’m genuinely optimistic about where they’re going with him.
3) More David Colton

Mark Zdarsky’s run on Captain America has been fantastic, and a highlight has been the introduction of a new Captain America: David Colton. Colton joined the army after 9/11, but was initially deemed unfit for duty due to physical limitations. Surprisingly, he was selected to become the new Captain America while serving in the Iraq War, discovering that being Captain America is about more than just the suit and shield. Zdarsky perfectly captured Colton’s character, and his first story arc featured a great meeting between Colton and Steve Rogers after Rogers was revived. Colton was also a key figure in Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, and he’s poised to play a significant role in an upcoming Marvel event. He’s one of the most compelling new characters Marvel has created in recent years, making his expanded role in a major event particularly exciting.
2) The Return of the New Avengers?

The Avengers have fallen on hard times lately. Once the central team in the Marvel Universe, they’ve struggled to stay relevant. The new series, Avengers: Armageddon, by Chip Zdarsky and Frank Alpizar, seems to be trying a familiar approach to revitalize the team. While the previous New Avengers series wasn’t perfect, it was the last time the Avengers really felt exciting. Bringing back popular heroes like Wolverine and Spider-Man, along with the addition of Invisible Woman, suggests Zdarsky might be aiming for a similar dynamic. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes clearly need a boost, and revisiting what worked in New Avengers could be just what they need.
1) Zdarky’s Coronation as Marvel’s Top Writer

I’ve been a huge fan of Chip Zdarksy’s work at Marvel lately. His runs on titles like Daredevil and Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man really proved how well he understands these iconic heroes. Honestly, he’s been carrying Marvel for the last year, and I think Armageddon is going to be the book that solidifies him as their top writer. Everything he’s been doing lately has been fantastic, and you can just tell how much planning and care he’s putting into Armageddon. It feels like this is the project that will finally put him among the absolute A-list of comic writers, and I’m really excited to see it happen.
