Honestly, it feels like we can’t go a month without hearing about another remake! 2025 is already shaping up to be full of reboots and revisits to old favorites. Look, remakes aren’t always terrible, but all these big studios seem to be playing it safe instead of taking risks on something original. There are a few that actually get me excited, but some are just… baffling. So, I’ve put together a list of five of the latest, ranking them from the ones I’m genuinely hoping will be good to the ones I think are a total waste of time.
2025 was a big year for remakes, showing that revisiting old movies can be very profitable, even if the results aren’t always artistically impressive. Some of the most talked-about remakes of the year included Lilo & Stitch, How to Train Your Dragon, The Naked Gun, The Running Man, Highest 2 Lowest, and Bugonia. While 2026 will bring remakes of films like Moana, 2025 also saw announcements of even more remakes planned for future years.
5) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Paramount Pictures announced in November 2025 that they’re planning a new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie series. The project is being led by producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Asher, who are known for The Fast and the Furious franchise. This remake is part of Paramount’s larger plan to make better use of its well-known brands and create more content based on them.
The previous live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movies, produced by Michael Bay, weren’t well-received by critics. Both those films and the original series suggest that live-action adaptations haven’t worked well for the franchise. Recently, TMNT has found success with animated shows like Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the new film, Mutant Mayhem. The announcement of a live-action remake has raised worries that the Mutant Mayhem series might be put on hold, potentially diminishing its impact.
4) My Hero Academia

Fans of the anime series My Hero Academia are worried about Netflix’s upcoming live-action remake. While some anime adaptations don’t work well, Netflix has had success with shows like One Piece. Given the current popularity of superhero content, a live-action My Hero Academia could be a big hit.
Netflix hasn’t always succeeded with live-action adaptations of anime. Both the Death Note movie and the Cowboy Bebop series received negative reviews and disappointed many original fans. This challenge isn’t unique to Netflix, as live-action remakes, even those from Disney, often struggle to live up to the quality of the animated versions they’re based on.
3) Magic

A remake of the 1978 film Magic is surprisingly in development for 2025. The original movie features Anthony Hopkins as a troubled ventriloquist who goes back to his hometown and finds love. Unfortunately, his puppet doesn’t like the new relationship, and things quickly become terrifying.
Lionsgate revealed in September 2025 that they’re planning a remake of the horror film Magic, and Sam Raimi will be producing. Raimi is a highly respected name in horror, known for his fun and over-the-top style, which seems like a great fit for this project. While Magic might not be the most famous horror movie, the remake promises to be entertaining.
2) Miami Vice

As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited about the Miami Vice remake Joseph Kosinski is directing. After seeing what he did with Top Gun: Maverick and F1, he just feels like the right person for this project. He’s proven he can deliver those big, visually stunning experiences, and I honestly think he could make a Miami Vice movie that’s even better than the one we got back in 2006.
Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are potential stars for the upcoming remake, and fans are thrilled at the possibility of seeing them work together. With the producer of The Batman also involved, the project is likely to draw a lot of talented people as it moves forward.
1) Resident Evil

Zach Cregger, the director of Barbarian and Weapons, is rebooting the Resident Evil film series, giving the popular video game franchise another chance. Previous Resident Evil movies and the film Welcome to Raccoon City weren’t well-received by critics, as they didn’t successfully capture the feel of the games or stand on their own as compelling stories.
Cregger is an excellent choice to direct the new Resident Evil film. He’s demonstrated in his past work the ability to blend lighthearted moments with true horror, which is exactly what the Resident Evil series needs. While many questions remain about the remake, Cregger’s vision gives this movie the best chance of being truly successful.
