Many of Hollywood’s most popular movie series are starting to lose momentum. While Star Wars will continue with new films like The Mandalorian & Grogu in 2026 and Starfighter in 2027, it seems unlikely Disney will create another full trilogy continuing the story of the Skywalker family. The Harry Potter franchise faces a similar challenge, with recent attempts to expand the Wizarding World in theaters not performing well. As a result, Warner Bros. Discovery is choosing to focus on a reboot series for HBO Max instead of continuing with movies.
I’m really excited to hear that Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t giving up on the world of Lord of the Rings! They clearly see the potential that’s still there in Middle-earth, and I’m thrilled they’re making a new movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. It sounds like it’s going to expand on the story we already know from The Fellowship of the Ring and even include scenes that were cut from the original trilogy. I’ve heard there are five scenes in particular that might finally make it into this new film, and I can’t wait to see them!
5) Merry Catching Onto Bilbo

Okay, let’s talk about Bilbo’s vanishing act in The Fellowship of the Ring. It’s a pretty shocking moment during his birthday party, but it turns out not everyone was surprised. Apparently, Merry Brandybuck had seen Bilbo pull off the same disappearing trick a year earlier! He was genuinely curious and even tried to figure out how his relative did it. It’s a nice little detail from Tolkien’s book that adds some depth to the story, showing that Bilbo’s magic wasn’t entirely out of the blue.
Because The Hunt for Gollum will likely feature the well-known Shire, the film could show Merry beginning to understand what’s happening. This would give his character more depth beyond simply being part of the group in The Fellowship of the Ring.
4) Gandalf Letting Loose

Gandalf becomes deeply concerned when he sees Bilbo disappear using a mysterious ring. Rings with such power are incredibly rare in Middle-earth. Realizing Bilbo doesn’t understand what he’s found, Gandalf decides to investigate the ring’s origins.
As a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings, I’m really excited about The Hunt for Gollum. It seems like it’ll delve into Gandalf trying to figure things out and how Gollum really becomes central to the whole struggle between good and evil. Apparently, something The Fellowship of the Ring didn’t show us is that Gandalf actually encounters Gollum quite a while before Frodo does! And from what I understand, getting information out of Gollum isn’t easy – Gandalf has to abandon his usual calm and get pretty forceful to get the truth.
3) Gollum Meeting a Key Ally

Gollum has a much deeper understanding of Middle-earth than Frodo, who grew up entirely within the Shire and hadn’t traveled much before their journey begins. Throughout most of the story, Gollum’s knowledge is useful, helping Sam and Frodo find their way. However, he intentionally leaves out one important piece of information, saving it for when he can use it to his advantage.
Just before they reach Mordor, Gollum betrays Frodo by leading him into the lair of Shelob, a massive spider. Gollum, who was once known as Smeagol, remembers Shelob from a previous encounter while fleeing Mordor. The story told in The Hunt for Gollum reveals how their relationship developed and adds depth to one of the most frightening scenes in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy.
2) Aragorn Learning the Truth

We first meet Aragorn shortly after the Hobbits leave their home, the Shire. But his arrival isn’t a coincidence – he’s known about the danger of Sauron for years and has been grappling with his own fate for six decades by the time he comes to Frodo’s aid.
Aragorn is a direct descendant of Isildur, the last king of Gondor. However, he doesn’t discover this right away; it takes almost 20 years for Elrond to reveal the truth. By exploring this important part of Middle-earth’s history, The Hunt for Gollum helps us understand what Aragorn was thinking and feeling before the events of the main trilogy.
1) Thranduil’s Role in the War

The Hobbit movies show us how Bilbo finds the One Ring, but they also tell another important story: the search for a powerful, unknown evil wizard. This wizard is eventually revealed to be Sauron, who is returning after a long absence to take revenge on Middle-earth. Gandalf tries to warn everyone about the danger, but not all of these warnings made it into The Lord of the Rings films.
Thranduil, Legolas’ father, is a significant character in The Hobbit trilogy – including his involvement in the Battle of the Five Armies – but he doesn’t appear in the original Lord of the Rings trilogy. Adding him to The Hunt for Gollum would help tie together all six films that share similar themes and story elements, and it would also resolve a noticeable gap in the narrative.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum hits theaters December 17, 2027
