As a huge fan, it’s easy to forget just how much they had to cut from the Harry Potter books when making the eight films, especially since the books got longer as the series went on. I always felt The Order of the Phoenix, being the longest book, got short shrift in the movie adaptation, and honestly, pretty much every other book had parts left out. They had to leave behind whole storylines and characters, and some of my favorite scenes never even made it to the big screen, which is a shame for anyone who only knows the story through the films!
The upcoming HBO Max reboot of the series is promising a more faithful adaptation of the books, giving each one a full season to develop. Because TV allows for more detail than the previous films, fans are hopeful that key scenes and character moments won’t be left out this time. Here are five scenes we’re most excited to see brought to life.
5) Dobby’s Gillyweed (and the House Elves)

In Goblet of Fire, Harry doesn’t receive gillyweed from Neville Longbottom. Instead, Dobby the house-elf gets it after overhearing a clue from Mad-Eye Moody (who is actually Barty Crouch Jr.). Dobby wakes Harry in the library just before the second task and offers him the gillyweed he stole from Snape’s office. This scene connects to a larger story involving Winky, Hermione’s efforts to help house-elves, the Hogwarts kitchens, and the unfair way house-elves are treated—details that were all left out of the movie. Considering how important Dobby’s death is to the story, it’s crucial that he’s previously helped (or attempted to help) Harry several times. Leaving out this scene significantly diminishes Dobby’s role in Goblet of Fire; without it, he doesn’t participate in the events at all.
4) Molly Weasley’s Boggart

In Order of the Phoenix, Molly Weasley faces a boggart – a creature that takes the form of your worst fear. Instead of a simple fear like snakes, the boggart transforms into each of her children and husband, lying dead. Overwhelmed with grief, she can’t defeat it until Lupin steps in. This is a powerfully emotional scene because it reveals the deep, constant fear Molly lives with as a mother, moving beyond the image of a warm, comforting figure. The moment highlights the serious danger presented by Voldemort’s return and hints at the tragic losses to come, including Fred’s death. It’s a crucial scene that demonstrates Molly’s vulnerability and signals a shift in the story’s tone, making it particularly important for the reboot.
3) The Weasleys Crash the Dursleys’

One of the funniest moments in Goblet of Fire happens when Arthur, Fred, and George attempt a magical rescue of Harry from the Dursleys’ fireplace, resulting in a spectacularly destroyed chimney. Adding to the chaos, Fred “accidentally” gives Dudley a Ton-Tongue Toffee, causing his tongue to grow to an enormous size. The Dursleys’ outrage combined with Arthur’s amused observation of Muggle life makes this a truly hilarious chapter. The movies left this scene out, probably because it doesn’t directly advance the main storyline, but the contrast between the Weasleys and the Dursleys always provides great comedic moments, highlighting the difference between Harry’s magical and non-magical worlds. It also hints at Fred and George’s future entrepreneurial spirit. If the series were rebooted, this scene could serve as a fantastic introduction to the Weasley family in Season 4.
2) The St. Mungos Hospital Visit

The visit to St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries in Order of the Phoenix is crucial for understanding Neville Longbottom’s past and the true impact of Voldemort’s war. After seeing a still-cheerful, yet memory-less, Gilderoy Lockhart signing autographs, the trio encounters Neville visiting his parents. They learn that Neville’s parents were horribly tortured into insanity by Bellatrix Lestrange and other Death Eaters – a particularly heartbreaking moment when Alice Longbottom instinctively offers Neville a gum wrapper, which he carefully saves. This scene is so important because it’s the first time Harry, Ron, and Hermione (and the readers) truly understand the weight Neville carries. In a potential reimagining, this moment offers a chance to further develop Neville’s character arc – from a seemingly clumsy kid to a brave hero – and to explore the lasting effects of war on families in more detail.
1) Harry Loses it in Dumbledore’s Office

Similar to a scene from Order of the Phoenix, Harry explodes with grief after Sirius’s death. He rushes to Dumbledore’s office, yelling about the loss and angrily throwing things around. It’s a very intense and vulnerable moment for Harry, showing his raw emotion. Dumbledore calmly allows Harry to express his feelings, even when Harry feels consumed by rage and momentarily wants to lash out at him. Harry is finally confronting the one person he believes has all the answers.
This scene is emotionally powerful and heartbreaking, showing Harry grappling with the loss of Sirius and realizing Dumbledore isn’t perfect. It also highlights Dumbledore’s particular way of showing he cares – he’s understanding, even when Harry is angry, and accepts the blame for past mistakes. If included in the reboot, this moment could be incredibly impactful for the actors and the story, as it’s a crucial turning point in their relationship. It’s surprising this scene was left out before, and if done well, it has the potential to be one of the most memorable parts of the new show.
