5 Sci-Fi Series That Ended in Frustrating Cliffhangers (#1 is Still Annoying)

Science fiction has captivated people for generations, proving popular in books, movies, and television. It excels at turning imaginative ideas about technology and life beyond Earth into compelling stories. While many successful sci-fi TV shows enjoy long runs thanks to dedicated viewers, some unfortunately get cancelled before their time.

It’s a common tactic for science fiction shows to end a season with a cliffhanger, hoping to get viewers excited for the next one. Unfortunately, sometimes these shows are cancelled before they can provide answers, leaving fans disappointed. Sci-fi series seem particularly prone to this frustrating pattern, dangling intriguing questions that never get resolved. The shows listed below all suffered this fate, and many viewers are still upset about it years later.

5) The Whispers (2015)

Despite being a critically acclaimed sci-fi series adapted from a Ray Bradbury story and executive produced by Steven Spielberg, The Whispers never found a large audience. Starring Lily Rabe and Milo Ventimiglia, the show was unfortunately canceled after just one season, leaving viewers with an unfinished story.

The show followed a group of children who started acting strangely after a new imaginary friend named Drill appeared. The series finale revealed that Drill was actually an alien race that had been trying to reach Earth, and their plan was to kidnap the children. The show ended with the aliens taking the children, leaving the story unfinished and creating a frustrating cliffhanger.

4) Sunny (2024)

Sunny is a compelling sci-fi show that flew under the radar, and unfortunately, it was cancelled after just one season. This means viewers will likely never get the closure they want from the story. The show centers around Suzie (Rashida Jones), who lives in a futuristic Kyoto and receives a robot helper after her husband and son go missing.

The show Sunny centers on Suzie, who is dealing with the loss of her family and finding comfort in a friendship with a robot named Sunny. Throughout the season, a slow-developing plot suggested a larger corporate conspiracy and a mystery surrounding her husband’s disappearance – with the finale strongly implying Sunny might hold the key. Unfortunately, the show was cancelled, so viewers will never know the full story.

3) The Society (2019)

Despite having a lot of promise, the sci-fi show The Society didn’t become a major hit, likely because it was cancelled after just one season. While it started as a suspenseful thriller, the show revealed its sci-fi elements in a surprising cliffhanger ending, making the cancellation even more disappointing for viewers who hoped it would become something truly special.

The series centers on a group of teens who come home from a field trip to find their town completely empty. Cut off from the rest of the world, they must work together to keep things running while trying to figure out what happened. The show’s intriguing mystery and unsettling premise kept viewers hooked, and the finale revealed they were actually stuck in a different reality. Although a second season was planned, it was unfortunately cancelled, leaving the story unresolved.

2) Sliders (1995-2000)

While Sliders was once thought to be a top-notch sci-fi series, it’s now mostly known for how disappointing it became. The show, which lasted five seasons, centered on a group traveling to different parallel universes, trying to find their way back home. It had some great moments, but the final season left viewers frustrated with its abrupt and unsatisfying ending.

The fifth season of Sliders ended with many unanswered questions. While the season focused on revealing the backstory of the main character, Quinn, his story concluded on an ambiguous note. The fate of the other characters was also left unknown, as they traveled to a final, unrevealed location. Essentially, all the show’s main storylines were left unresolved, leading many fans to believe Sliders needed another season to provide a proper conclusion.

1) FlashForward (2009-2010)

The sci-fi show FlashForward has gained a reputation – often a frustrated one – among fans of the genre. The series centers on FBI agents trying to solve a strange event: a mass blackout where most of the world briefly saw six months into their own futures. Initially, FlashForward was well-received by both critics and viewers, offering a mix of mystery, drama, and science fiction.

Sadly, the show is best remembered for one of the most annoying cliffhangers in science fiction TV history. The first season ended by deepening its main mystery, with another global blackout and a brief glimpse of future events. Even though FlashForward did offer some clues about its direction, the fact that the cliffhanger was never resolved remains frustrating for viewers even now, over a decade later.
