5 Sci-Fi Shows Everyone Should Regret Ignoring

Science fiction has been a staple of television ever since the early days of the medium. Groundbreaking shows like The Twilight Zone and the original Star Trek introduced the genre to a wide audience, and people have been watching sci-fi ever since. The most successful sci-fi shows often grow into large franchises or enjoy long runs on television. Ultimately, a show’s survival depends on its ratings, as viewership numbers are the primary measure of success in the television industry.

As a sci-fi fanatic, it really bugs me when a great show gets lost in the shuffle. Sometimes, no matter how good something is, it just doesn’t find its audience, and that’s especially true with TV these days. There’s so much content being released, it’s easy for genuinely brilliant shows to get overlooked. I’ve come across a few sci-fi series that deserve way more attention, and honestly, I wish more people would give them a chance – they’re seriously good and it’s a shame they didn’t get the recognition they deserved.

5) Humans (Channel 4/AMC, 2015-2018)

The TV show Humans is a fantastic science fiction series that unfortunately didn’t get enough recognition. It was inspired by the Swedish drama Real Humans and explores what happens when incredibly realistic robots, called synths, start living among people, causing conflict and societal strain. The show had a large cast and aired for three seasons before being cancelled.

The show Humans explored classic science fiction themes like artificial intelligence, the rules governing robots, what it means to be conscious, and the potential risks of creating super-intelligent machines. It’s considered one of the most compelling sci-fi stories in recent memory, successfully blending thought-provoking concepts with engaging entertainment. Sadly, low viewership led to its cancellation, which is a shame because more people should have given it a chance to continue its intriguing storyline.

4) Foundation (Apple TV+, 2021-Present)

Based on Isaac Asimov’s classic novels, Foundation premiered on Apple TV+ in 2021 and is still running, with a fourth season already planned. Despite being a fantastic science fiction series, it hasn’t gotten the widespread recognition it deserves after its first three seasons.

Foundation has all the qualities of a classic science fiction series, but it hasn’t yet gained the widespread recognition it deserves. While critics like it and enough viewers are watching to keep it going, the show isn’t getting the attention it needs. It risks fading into obscurity as a beloved but short-lived sci-fi show, unless more people start watching and supporting it.

3) The Peripheral (Prime Video, 2022)

I was really into The Peripheral when it came out on Amazon Prime Video in 2022! It got some good reviews, which is why I was so bummed when they cancelled it before it could even get a second season. Chloë Grace Moretz is fantastic in it, and the show has a huge cast. It’s based on a William Gibson book, and the story is all about this gamer who somehow gets connected to a totally different reality thanks to some new tech. It’s a really cool concept!

Although The Peripheral wasn’t perfect, it was a promising sci-fi series that deserved to continue. The show had a compelling and original story, and the first season ended with hints of exciting things to come. While its cancellation isn’t shocking given the low viewership, it’s disappointing for those who wish more people had given it a chance.

2) Future Man (Hulu, 2017-2020)

The show Future Man is a particularly disappointing cancellation. This sci-fi comedy featured Josh Hutcherson as a regular guy who suddenly had to save the world, all thanks to his talent for video games. Though it didn’t get enough attention while it was on, it’s a series many viewers wish had lasted longer.

It’s a shame Future Man didn’t get the recognition it deserved while it was airing, and it’s been even more overlooked since then. Unfortunately, budget issues led to it being taken off all streaming services, making it hard for fans to rewatch. It’s a funny and original sci-fi show, and people really missed out by not giving it a chance.

1) FlashForward (ABC, 2009-2010)

Though it didn’t achieve massive mainstream popularity, the sci-fi show FlashForward gained a dedicated following. The series centered around a diverse group of people who briefly saw their own futures during a strange global event. Fans were deeply disappointed when it was canceled after only one season.

Beyond its frustratingly unresolved ending, FlashForward is remembered as a show that never lived up to its promise. The story was captivating, and with a bit more time, it could have become as popular as hits like Lost or The X-Files. It’s a sci-fi series many wish they’d watched when it first came out, because a lack of viewers led to its early cancellation.
