The Star Wars franchise has faced some challenges recently. The final film in the sequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, received negative reviews from both critics and fans, who often criticized its confusing plot. Luckily, Lucasfilm found some success with the Disney+ streaming service, allowing them to create TV shows with less pressure than the films faced. However, this positive trend didn’t continue, as series like Star Wars: The Acolyte and Star Wars: Skeleton Crew were canceled after just one season. Now, Star Wars is hoping to make a big comeback in theaters with Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu and Star Wars: Starfighter.
Shawn Levy’s upcoming film with Ryan Gosling seems promising, but the same can’t be said for The Mandalorian & Grogu, which is essentially continuing the story from Star Wars’ initial Disney+ series. Lucasfilm hasn’t yet explained why it’s making a movie out of its most popular show, and it might not ever try. This is disappointing, as there are several other Star Wars narratives that deserved a cinematic release before we see Din Djarin’s next chapter.
5) Poe Dameron Prequel

The Rise of Skywalker isn’t a particularly strong film overall, but it does successfully elevate Poe Dameron’s role in the story. He accompanies the team as they search for Sith relics and shares some details about his background, notably that he once worked as a smuggler. Given that Poe’s parents are famous figures in the Rebel Alliance, delving into the reasons behind his earlier criminal life would be a compelling storyline. While the comic books briefly explore this, it has the potential to be even more impactful as a movie.
4) Obi-Wan Kenobi Follow-Up

Even before Ewan McGregor reprised his role in the Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+, discussions were happening about a film centered on his Jedi character. Although the show successfully follows Kenobi’s mission to safeguard Leia Organa from those who would capture her, it often feels constrained. Giving the iconic character the resources of a movie budget seems like a promising path, particularly now that he’s prepared to connect with his deceased mentor, Qui-Gon Jinn, and discover how to achieve oneness with the Force.
3) Rogue Squadron

Lucasfilm has a reputation for starting ambitious projects, then abandoning them when challenges arise, quickly shifting focus to something new. For a time, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins was developing Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, a film centered around the iconic group of X-Wing pilots. The concept was described as Top Gun set in space, and it’s difficult to envision a more exciting premise. Although Starfighter may share some similarities with Rogue Squadron, there appears to be enough space for both films to explore the lives of pilots.
2) Darth Plagueis Prequel

The Acolyte tries to do a lot, and doesn’t quite succeed at everything. However, the biggest highlight of the show is definitely the hint about Darth Plagueis. The Sith Lord appears in the final episode, and a potential second season would have delved further into his background. Even though The Acolyte has finished, the story of Plagueis doesn’t have to end. Lucasfilm could easily approve a film focusing on Darth Sidious’ master and the circumstances surrounding his secretive demise.
1) Heir to the Empire

The narrative Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau are building across their shows focuses on what’s left of the Empire scattered throughout the galaxy. Grand Admiral Thrawn is the major threat, and with his return-and seeming increased power-it seems like the right moment to unite everyone against him. While The Mandalorian & Grogu might be setting the scene for this, there’s no need to delay. Let’s assemble Ahsoka Tano, Boba Fett, Luke Skywalker, and anyone else who has a functioning spacecraft and go directly to battle against Thrawn and his forces.
The Mandalorian & Grogu hits theaters on May 22, 2026.
