Romantasy—a blend of romance and fantasy—is currently a huge trend in entertainment. Series like Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses have become incredibly popular, and the genre continues to grow. While many romantasy books are doing well, Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean Saga—starting with Fourth Wing and continuing with Iron Flame and Onyx Storm—has truly become a cultural phenomenon, and is now being adapted into a television show.
Fourth Wing introduces Violet Sorrengail, who unexpectedly finds herself at a harsh military academy training to become a dragon rider. It’s a dangerous place where survival is the main goal, and students often don’t make it. The dragons themselves are central to the story – each one is a fully realized character with distinct personalities and abilities, as important as any human in the world of Navarre. Here’s a look at the five most powerful dragons from the Empyrean Saga, ranked by their strength, not just popularity.
5) Solas

Solas, an orange Daggertail dragon, appears in the second book of the series, Iron Flame, and is bonded with Major Burton Varrish. He’s easily recognizable because he’s missing an eye, lost in a fight with Tairneanach. Solas is a particularly fierce and cunning dragon, known for being ruthless and unpredictable – making him a serious threat. During Conscription Day, he attacks Third Squad, injuring a first-year cadet with fire. Though smaller and less powerful than Tairneanach, Solas is one of the few dragons brave enough to confront him. Ultimately, Tairneanach kills Solas.
4) Andarna

Okay, so Andarna is Violet’s dragon, and she’s seriously powerful. At first, she seemed like just a cool, multi-colored scorpiontail dragon, but we’ve learned she’s actually an Irid Dragon – a really rare and strong type. Throughout the story, her powers have grown a lot. She can even briefly stop time, though it totally wipes her out afterwards. Plus, her claws are incredibly sharp, and her dragonfire isn’t just hot – it can actually bypass a venin’s defenses. We even saw her bite the head off a weakened venin! Honestly, a lot of fans, myself included, think she’s going to end up being the most powerful dragon of them all. We’ve only seen a glimpse of what she’s capable of, and I can’t wait to see how her abilities develop as she gets older.
3) Sgaeyl

Sgaeyl is a powerful navy blue daggertail dragon, bonded with Xaden Riorsan and mated to Tairneanach. She’s massive, with long blue horns and a spiked tail, making her a formidable opponent. Known for her fierce personality, even other dragons avoid crossing her. Beyond her impressive size and strength, Sgaeyl has unique abilities – she can sense runes and communicate telepathically with other dragons, and she’s remarkably fast, giving her a significant advantage.
2) Tairneanach

Tairn, a black Morningstar dragon, is best known as Sgaeyl’s mate and Violet Sorrengail’s bonded dragon. He’s a large and formidable dragon, giving him a significant advantage in combat, and he’s also a skilled and intelligent warrior. Though powerful and often aggressive, Tairn has a surprisingly dry wit and enjoys playfully teasing Violet, whom he fiercely protects. Beyond his size, speed, and strength, Tairn possesses considerable magical abilities, making him a truly impressive dragon—though not the most powerful one.
1) Codagh
Codagh is the most formidable dragon in the Empyrean Saga, despite not appearing often. As an ancient Black Swordtail dragon, he’s incredibly old and experienced, and physically towers over all others. He’s not only the largest dragon on the continent but also the most powerful, with a terrifying reputation. Codagh’s strength is amplified by General Augustine Melgren, who rides him and uses a special signet to gain battle foresight – the ability to predict the outcome of any fight. This makes them an unstoppable force, and so far, no other dragon in the saga has proven to be a match for Codagh.
