Discussing the greatest TV series of all time, it’s challenging not to include “Game of Thrones,” the HBO fantasy production based on George R. R. Martin’s books. The series sets off with a strong start, weaving the tale of the power struggle for the Iron Throne in Westeros. The initial six seasons are rich with intrigue, romance, and action that rivals the best TV has to offer. However, starting from Season 7, some flaws become apparent in “Game of Thrones.” The main concern is that the storyline appears hurried due to a reduced episode count compared to earlier seasons. Yet, by the finale, everything seems to fall into place, setting up an anticipated final season.
Regrettably, Season 8 continues much of what we’ve seen before, with significant conflicts like the one between the North and the Night King being resolved too quickly. Even long-established character arcs from as far back as Season 1 seem to lose their impact. However, there are still five aspects that make Game of Thrones‘ final season worth appreciating.
1) Theon Greyjoy Finds Redemption
As a staunch supporter, I must admit that my actions against the Stark family left me in an unenviable position, making me one of the least favored characters in “Game of Thrones.” My choices often led to others’ distress, and it was Ramsay Bolton who ultimately captured me and transformed me into Reek.
However, enduring Ramsay’s brutal reign served as a catalyst for change within me. I found the strength to re-evaluate my life and eventually make amends, turning over a new leaf in my journey.
Nurturing Sansa Stark stirs a change within Theon, leading him to bravely stand by her side against his treacherous uncle, Euron Greyjoy. After their battle concludes, he returns to Winterfell where he sacrifices himself while shielding Bran Stark from the Night King. Theon’s journey may not end in fame, but it culminates in inner tranquility.
2) Arya Stark Has Her Big Moment
A significant shift occurs for Arya Stark when she witnesses her father’s death in King’s Landing. This event sets her on a path that ultimately leads her to Bravos, where she encounters the enigmatic Faceless Men. Upon completion of her training, she returns to Westeros, fully prepared to eliminate each name on her hit list.
In the first six seasons of “Game of Thrones,” Arya Stark appears to be working towards an important and potentially monumental goal, even greater than defeating Cersei Lannister. However, it’s in Season 8 where Arya achieves her most significant moment in the series, slaying the Night King with a Valyrian steel dagger.
The initial six seasons of “Game of Thrones” suggest that Arya Stark is on a path towards something grand, possibly even more significant than defeating Cersei Lannister. However, it’s in Season 8 where she achieves her most notable moment in the series by killing the Night King with a Valyrian steel dagger.
3) Cersei Lannister Gets What She Deserves
Regarding Cersei, throughout the last season, she remains in King’s Landing, anticipating her adversaries from the North. Daenerys Targaryen endeavors to persuade Cersei to yield, but instead, Cersei retaliates by executing Missandei – a dear friend of Daenerys. With most of her loved ones absent, Daenerys removes any pretense and readies for action.
During Daenerys’ destructive siege of King’s Landing, it’s no surprise that Cersei tries to escape, given her desire for control. Unfortunately, she doesn’t get far from the Red Keep. Although it’s unfortunate that Jaime Lannister meets his end with her, seeing Cersei dead might justify the cost of an HBO Max subscription.
4) Jon Snow Stops Fighting
Jon Snow forgoes titles and land ownership, instead choosing to join the Night’s Watch at Castle Black. His tenure there is marked by both the struggle against the undead and internal conflicts with fellow brothers who are ready to betray. Even after he dies and is miraculously revived by the Lord of Light, Jon cannot resist the call to action. He ultimately journeys to Winterfell to reclaim his childhood home from the Boltons.
In the concluding chapter, Jon confronts the Night King’s army and subsequently joins Daenerys’ troops as they storm King’s Landing. Yet, a change in Daenerys’ demeanor compels Jon to face a challenging decision. Though the Unsullied seek his death for slaying Daenerys, the new rulers of Westeros grant him the opportunity to rejoin the Night’s Watch and depart with the Wildlings back to Beyond the Wall – a place where he previously felt content and at peace.
5) Sansa Stark Discovers Her Place in the World
As the child of the Northern Warden, Sansa Stark understands that advancing in life requires marrying someone influential. She aims for Joffrey Baratheon, but this choice leads to misfortune. After spending some time as a captive in King’s Landing, she manages to flee, but more hardships loom over her in the North.
Sansa Stark’s tale is marked by tragedy, yet she refuses to let her past dictate her future. Her association with questionable individuals aids her in learning leadership skills and fostering an ability to see others’ flaws. The finale of ‘Game of Thrones’ recognizes Sansa’s potential as a leader, crowning her queen by the people of the North, thereby empowering her once more after enduring years of suffering.
Game of Thrones is streaming on HBO Max.
