5 Things We Need to See from Dungeons & Dragons: Warlock

At The Game Awards, Wizards of the Coast announced the next major Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game: Warlock. While details are currently limited, the reveal trailer and early information suggest this game is forging its own path, rather than trying to copy Baldur’s Gate 3. That’s encouraging, and I’m really excited to see what this new D&D video game will offer.

Warlock is the next game from Invoke Studios, the team behind Dungeons & Dragons: Dark Alliance. Invoke Studios was acquired by Wizards of the Coast in 2019, and while Dark Alliance didn’t get great reviews, they haven’t released a new game since. Warlock will be another attempt at a Dungeons & Dragons video game, and hopefully the developers have used what they learned from the previous game to make this one better. I’m really hoping for a new single-player D&D RPG, so I’m staying positive and looking forward to what they create. Here are 5 features I’d love to see in the game.

5) In-Depth But Accessible Lore

I’ll always have a soft spot for Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance – it was my first experience with Dungeons & Dragons, and I hope Warlock can introduce a new generation to the same world. What made Dark Alliance so good was how it used real D&D elements but made them easy to understand. You didn’t have to be an expert to enjoy it; you could cast spells and fight monsters without knowing all the backstory.

I’m excited about the potential to really explore what makes the Warlock class so captivating. We should highlight the relationship between warlocks and their patrons, staying true to the tabletop role-playing game while also making it appealing to new players. Similarly, let’s showcase famous locations from Dungeons & Dragons, ensuring they’re both accurate and engaging for everyone, regardless of their experience level.

4) A Robust Open World That Rewards Exploration

Wizards has announced that Warlock will be an open-world role-playing game. While I generally enjoy open-world games, they can often fall short. I’m reminded of the empty landscapes in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet and the almost deserted city in Bloodlines 2. Having a Dungeons & Dragons game set in an open world sounds fantastic, but the world itself needs to be interesting and rewarding to explore.

I absolutely love Skyrim – it’s just amazing how every time you play, the world feels different and full of surprises. That’s exactly what I’m hoping for in Warlock! I really want to explore and stumble upon all sorts of cool, unexpected things. I’m picturing tons of monsters and characters straight out of Dungeons & Dragons, each with their own little stories and secrets to discover. And honestly? Please, please let there be mimics! They’re the best.

3) Engaging Action RPG Combat That Feels Like Playing a Spellcaster

A key difference between Warlock and Baldur’s Gate 3 that will appeal to some players is its gameplay style. Warlock will be an action RPG, moving away from the turn-based combat of Baldur’s Gate 3 to a more direct, action-oriented format. While I enjoyed Baldur’s Gate 3, I sometimes wished for the more immersive experience of physically controlling attacks like sword swings, arrow shots, or spellcasting.

The Warlock class in D&D looks promising. Based on the first trailer, it appears this character will combine spellcasting with swordplay, which could create exciting combat possibilities. I’m hoping for fast-paced, satisfying action that truly captures the feel of playing a Warlock.

2) Class Customization Within the Fixed Warlock Main Character

This time around, the game will likely feature a defined main character instead of letting players create their own. I think this is a good change because it allows for a richer, more detailed story focused on that character. However, it might mean we lose some of the personal connection that comes from building your own character, like in Dungeons & Dragons. Even though we’ll be playing as a Warlock, I hope the game still gives us meaningful choices as we level up and progress.

In Dungeons & Dragons, every warlock character is unique. There are lots of ways to customize them as they gain levels, creating diverse playstyles. We want our main character, Kaatri, to offer a similar level of customization, allowing players to define how she fights and how her story unfolds based on their choices.

1) An Incredible Story That Feels Like a Fantasy Novel with D&D Trimmings

I’m really hoping the next Dungeons & Dragons game has a strong story. Baldur’s Gate 3 had a great, branching narrative, but it could feel overwhelming with so many characters and romantic interests. Focusing more on a central character could allow the developers to create a really compelling and detailed story for Kaatri.

Wizards recently shared with ComicBook that how players make decisions will actually change the story. This means the game will likely have different storylines and several possible endings. Hopefully, the story will feel grand and fantastical, no matter what path you take. I’m hoping to really connect with the main character and feel like my choices genuinely matter as the story progresses.

We’ll get a better look at gameplay for Warlock during the summer of 2026, and the game is currently planned to launch in 2027. Until then, we can look forward to learning more!
