The Justice League is DC Comics’ most famous team of superheroes, known for its powerful and iconic members. While the League protects the entire DC Universe, different spin-off teams have formed over time to handle specific threats and regions. Groups like Justice League Dark and Justice League International are well-known, but many other Justice League versions also deserve recognition for their interesting members and important contributions to fighting evil in the DC Universe.
These are the most underrated offshoots of the Justice League in DC Comics.
5) Justice League of America

The Justice League of America was once the main superhero team at DC Comics, but a newer version, created as part of the ‘New 52’ series, is presented as a government-backed team separate from the original League. Amanda Waller and Steve Trevor formed this team as a precaution – a way to stop the main Justice League if they ever became a threat. What the team members didn’t know was that they were assembled with the possibility of having to fight – and potentially defeat – their counterparts. Despite this, they generally strived to be true heroes, not just tools. Led in the field by Steve Trevor, the team included Martian Manhunter, Catwoman, Katana, Vibe, Green Lantern Simon Baz, Hawkman, Stargirl, and Green Arrow. It’s compelling to see this politically-motivated version of the JLA battling villains like the Crime Syndicate, Black Adam, and Shadow Thief.
4) Justice League Elite

Over the years, the Justice League has formed several secret, covert teams. The first and arguably most overlooked was Justice League Elite. This team was unique because it was largely made up of former members of the supervillain group, the Elite. It was created by Vera Black, also known as Sister Superior, as a way to make amends for the actions of her brother, Manchester Black, the Elite’s previous and malicious leader. Other members included heroes like Coldcast, Hat, Kasumi, Flash, and Green Arrow, alongside more complex figures like Major Disaster, Naif al Sheik, Menagerie, and the Manitou twins, Dawn and Raven. Working in the shadows, this group of heroes, anti-heroes, and reformed villains protected people from threats like aliens, assassins, and magic users. The idea of a Justice League focused on espionage and featuring morally ambiguous characters was a clever one, offering engaging character interactions and unexpected turns.
3) Justice League China

Facing off against the Justice League, the Chinese government decided to build a team of its own superheroes to defend the country from threats like terrorists and supervillains. Most of these heroes gained their abilities through special government training. For example, Kong Kenan, known as Superman, inherited powers from the original Man of Steel; Wang Baixi, the Chinese Bat-Man, is a brilliant robotics expert; and Peng Deilian, inspired by Wonder-Woman, is a mystical serpent from Chinese legends. Later additions to the team included Avery Ho, as Flash, and Ahn Kwang-Jo, known as Dragonson, who fills the role of Aquaman. This team offers a fresh take on classic heroes, blending Chinese culture and mythology in a way that’s rarely seen in Western comics.
2) Justice League Odyssey

When a mysterious new area of space known as the “Ghost Sector” emerged, the Justice League Odyssey was created to explore it. This team included Cyborg, Starfire, Azrael, Green Lantern Jessica Cruz, and even a diminished Darkseid. After Cyborg, Starfire, Azrael, and Jessica became stranded with Darkseid in the Ghost Zone, they reluctantly joined forces to locate ancient artifacts that could stop the incredibly powerful villain, Perpetua. True to form, Darkseid ultimately betrayed them, building an army of New Gods and capturing several JLO members. Jessica then teamed up with Orion, Blackfire, and Red Lantern Dex-Starr to defeat Darkseid and rescue her teammates. They were successful in overcoming Darkseid and his forces. Despite being an unusual group of heroes and villains, the team worked together effectively and proved surprisingly engaging.
1) Justice League Incarnate

Unlike other Justice League teams focused on a single world, the Justice League Incarnate protects the entire DC Multiverse. This team of heroes, originally assembled to help Earth-7’s storm god, Thunderer, defeat a powerful being called the Empty Hand, includes unique characters like President Superman, Atomic Batman, Mary Marvel, and Aquawoman. Over time, heroes like Flashpoint Batman and Doctor Multiverse have joined their ranks. The Justice League Incarnate acts as the first line of defense against major cosmic threats – including Darkseid, the Dark Knights, and Injustice Incarnate – and highlights the incredible variety of powerful heroes found throughout the DC Multiverse.
