As a huge movie and TV fan, I’m always excited about fantasy shows, but they can be tricky to pull off. It’s a genre that really swings both ways – some are amazing, others just fall flat. But when fantasy does work, it’s incredible! We’ve seen that with shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Avatar: The Last Airbender that have stuck with audiences for years. And then Game of Thrones came along and totally proved how great epic fantasy could be on TV, which is why everyone’s pouring money into making more now. I’m really hoping these upcoming shows live up to that potential – they could be masterpieces!
Following the success of Game of Thrones, new fantasy shows have had varying degrees of success. While The Wheel of Time and The Rings of Power look impressive, they’ve also sparked a lot of debate. Shows like His Dark Materials and Interview With the Vampire are critically acclaimed but haven’t reached widespread popularity. Plus, many streaming series are unfortunately canceled too soon. However, some upcoming shows have the potential to really stand out, offering excellent stories and gaining a large fanbase.
5) A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

Despite the mixed reactions to how Game of Thrones ended, it remains a truly exceptional show. House of the Dragon wasn’t perfect, but it came pretty close to the same level of quality. Considering the franchise’s history, it’s reasonable to expect that HBO’s next series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will be good too. In fact, George R.R. Martin, who isn’t always quick to praise adaptations, has spoken very highly of this new show. He believes it successfully captures the spirit of his Dunk and Egg stories, which are already beloved by fans. With Martin’s positive feedback and the quality of the source material, there’s a lot to look forward to when A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres in January 2026.
4) The Forgotten Realms

Both The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein raised expectations for Dungeons & Dragons shows on Netflix, and also showed what’s possible with this kind of adaptation. Both series are exceptional, although we’ve only seen four episodes of The Mighty Nein so far. The upcoming The Forgotten Realms seems likely to have a similar feel – strong world-building, relatable themes, and plenty of humor – giving it a good chance of success. The setting itself is rich with storytelling potential, as proven by the popular Legend of Drizzt book series. While the popularity of D&D and previous adaptations don’t guarantee success for Netflix, all the key ingredients are there if the show is made with care.
3) God of War

For a long time, video game adaptations were met with doubt, but shows like Arcane and The Last of Us have proven they can be fantastic. Now, there’s hope that the upcoming God of War series on Prime Video will be just as successful. The game itself is highly acclaimed, giving the show a strong story to work with. If the series can capture the heart and mythology of the original, it should resonate with fans. Prime Video has also shown it can deliver exciting action, which is great news for a show based on the combat-focused God of War.
2) Avatar: Seven Havens

As a long-time fan, I’m thrilled to see Avatar: The Last Airbender still resonates after 20 years! It’s more than just a kids’ show – the writing is genuinely smart, it tackles themes that still feel relevant today, and the world and characters are unforgettable. While The Legend of Korra didn’t quite reach the same level of brilliance, it had moments that came close. Like the best franchises, Avatar consistently delivers quality, and with the original creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, returning for Avatar: Seven Havens, I have high hopes. Details are still scarce, but the foundation is solid: a rich world, a unique magic system, and a team with a proven track record. Hopefully, this next installment won’t be hampered by the production struggles that unfortunately impacted Korra.
1) Fourth Wing

The buzz around Fourth Wing makes it a highly anticipated fantasy adaptation. While the books aren’t perfect, they’re among the best in the growing “romantasy” genre. A TV series on Prime Video has the potential to elevate the story, building on its strengths and improving any weaknesses. The world of dragons and political intrigue is full of possibilities and is likely to attract a wide audience, mirroring the book’s success. Given the lack of romance-focused fantasy on television, Fourth Wing is poised to stand out and, with a good adaptation, could reach the same level of popularity as Game of Thrones.
