The world of Dragon Ball has always been filled with incredible and imaginative elements, but when the series started, its characters felt surprisingly relatable. Looking back at the very beginning, it’s striking how much stronger the main characters have become over time, and how that extreme power has now become the standard.
Watching Dragon Ball, it’s clear power levels are always shifting and depend on the situation. Because of this, I’ve noticed some villains who seemed really powerful at the time and gave Goku and his friends a tough fight, but when you look at the bigger picture, they weren’t actually that strong. Here are a few examples of characters who felt underwhelming despite momentarily humbling our heroes.
Ninja Murasaki’s Exceptional Stealth Training Is Useless Against Goku’s Superior Skills
Most of the fighters defeated in the Dragon Ball World Tournament aren’t really villains—they’re just weaker opponents. However, the series does feature true villains, including bizarre characters like Buyon and Major Metallitron. While Ninja Murasaki isn’t the weakest member of the Red Ribbon Army—General White, Colonel Silver, Staff Officer Black, and Commander Red are all around the same strength—he definitely seems like the most pitiful.
The series highlights that Murasaki is an exceptionally skilled ninja. He remains unfazed even when Goku defeats Major Metallitron, and demonstrates impressive speed, camouflage, and weapon mastery – especially with shurikens. However, despite all his training, Murasaki’s abilities don’t quite measure up to Goku’s natural power. Furthermore, he lacks the raw strength needed to compensate if his ninja techniques aren’t enough.
The main weakness of Ninja Murasaki is that he’s introduced as a comical character meant to be the butt of the joke. This makes him appear more ridiculous than intimidating, and the story seems to set him up for defeat. Even his main battle tactic relies on summoning his siblings to simply overwhelm opponents with numbers.
Chiaotzu’s Early Antagonistic Run Highlighted His Serious Shortcomings
Chiaotzu is a valued member of the Z-Fighters, though he now primarily supports his partner, Tien. Both Chiaotzu and Tien started out as villains in the original Dragon Ball series. They were manipulated by Master Shen, who poisoned their minds and used the 22nd World Tournament to get revenge on his old rival, Master Roshi. Tien was portrayed as a counterpart to Yamcha, and Chiaotzu fought against Krillin.
I remember Chiaotzu being pretty strong for the early days of Dragon Ball. He’d already learned to control his energy, or ‘ki’, and could even fly! What really stood out about him, though, were his psychic abilities. He used them in the tournament to mess with the pairings, and then actually attacked Krillin with them! Krillin was totally surprised, but Chiaotzu lost his focus when Krillin started asking him simple math questions. That was all it took, and Chiaotzu was quickly defeated after that.
It’s interesting that Chiaotzu is defeated so easily, as it’s similar to the weakness of the Metalmen. Characters like Auta Magetta and Bikkura Quoitur are surprisingly vulnerable to insults, despite being incredibly strong – they weigh a ton and can generate extreme heat. While powerful, they have this unusual flaw. Similarly, Chiaotzu isn’t as physically strong as many other characters in Dragon Ball, especially compared to those from the original series.
The Ginyu Force’s Guldo Punches Above His Weight Due To One Totemic Technique
Frieza often calls on a special team, the Ginyu Force, to deal with troublesome situations. Things on Namek get so irritating for Frieza that he needs their help. The Ginyu Force proves its power against opponents like Vegeta, Krillin, Gohan, and Goku, and they’re known for being incredibly strong.
Guldo, often considered the weakest member of the Ginyu Force, might not seem very powerful at first glance. However, he proved his worth by defeating all of his teammates – Recoome, Burter, Jeice, and even Captain Ginyu – to join the group. What makes Guldo unique is his incredibly strong ability to stop time. While powerful, this ability has a catch: he can only freeze time as long as he can hold his breath, which often becomes his downfall.
Guldo is a formidable opponent with strong telekinetic abilities, and his psychic powers almost defeat Gohan and Krillin. He’s more dangerous than weaker members of Frieza’s army like Cui, Appule, and Dodoria. However, Guldo relies heavily on the support of his teammates in the Ginyu Force and tends to use his time-freezing ability to escape rather than fight.
Garlic Jr.’s Strength & Resilience Is Incredibly Conditional
The Dragon Ball series is known for its powerful and memorable villains. Garlic Jr. is unique because he appears in both the first Dragon Ball Z movie, Dead Zone, and then again in a separate story arc after Frieza is defeated. He challenges typical ideas about strength and where it originates.
Even though Garlic Jr. achieves immortality, it doesn’t matter if he’s still vulnerable to attack. He only becomes a real danger once he transforms into Super Garlic Jr., a form powered by the Makyo Star’s closeness to Earth. Garlic Jr., like other Makyans, draws strength from the darkness of the Makyo Star.
Garlic Jr. isn’t very powerful on his own, needing the Makyo Star or his weak Black Water Mist minions to be a threat. Even at his strongest, Super Garlic Jr. is one of the weaker villains in the Dragon Ball series. Surprisingly, even baby Gohan’s outburst of anger was enough to defeat him and send him back to the demon realm.
Turles Is A Low-Level Saiyan Who Steals Strength Through The Tree Of Might’s Fruit
The Saiyan race is a major force in Dragon Ball Z, particularly in the show’s early storylines. The third Dragon Ball Z movie, The Tree of Might, introduces Turles, a villainous Saiyan who attacks Earth. Turles isn’t portrayed as a particularly powerful Saiyan; some guides list his initial power level around 19,000. However, his true strength is hard to measure because he constantly uses a technique to artificially boost it.
I’m absolutely fascinated by the Tree of Might! It’s incredible – this thing can absorb a whole planet’s energy and condense it into a single fruit. Turles keeps eating this fruit, and it pushes his power to insane levels, even letting him go toe-to-toe with Goku’s Kaio-Ken! Their fight is a blast to watch, but honestly, it feels more like a demonstration of the Tree’s power than Turles’ own abilities. It’s the Tree that’s doing most of the heavy lifting, you know?
Turles is a fairly standard villain who unexpectedly gains a huge power increase. Even Monaka from Dragon Ball Super would be a strong opponent if he ate the fruit from the Tree of Might. Turles stands out mostly because he looks like an evil version of Goku. Aside from that, he isn’t particularly impressive in terms of raw strength.
