As a Nintendo fan, I remember when the Wii U came out in 2012. Sadly, it just didn’t take off like the original Wii. It only sold around 14 million units worldwide, which isn’t great. While it wasn’t the worst console ever (the Virtual Boy still holds that title, in my opinion!), it definitely underperformed. The good news is, there were still some fantastic games for it – even The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild came out on the Wii U! But let’s be real, there were also some really bad ones. I’ve been digging through the game list, and I’ve picked out five of the absolute worst, based on what critics said when they first came out, how annoying they were to play, and just how much gamers disliked them.
1) Fast and Furious: Showdown

Released in 2013 for all consoles, including the Wii U, Fast & Furious: Showdown is a video game set between the fifth and sixth Fast & Furious movies. Unfortunately, the game was a commercial and critical failure on every platform. While the Nintendo 3DS version received the best reviews, they were still quite poor. The Wii U version, in particular, was considered unfun and disappointing. IGN reviewer Marty Silva famously said the game felt like it was trying to make him quit, a sentiment that reflects the overwhelmingly negative reception.
2) Steel Rivals

If you’re searching for a truly bad fighting game you’ve never encountered, you might stumble upon Steel Rivals. Released for the Wii U in 2016, it didn’t impress anyone – neither critics nor players. The game’s biggest flaw is that it launched with significant bugs and gameplay problems, leading many to believe it shouldn’t have been released in the first place. It felt like the developers simply gave up and released an unfinished product without addressing its numerous issues.
3) Meme Run

One puzzling decision from Nintendo was allowing the indie game Meme Run on the Wii U eShop. This endless runner was absolutely packed with internet memes, to the point of being visually overwhelming. While it seemed aimed at attracting younger, meme-loving players, it quickly led to a copyright lawsuit over the use of the trollface meme. Thankfully, Nintendo removed the game from the eShop, meaning it’s now very difficult to find and play this incredibly distracting, minimalist meme-fest.
4) Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade

The Wii and Wii U were known for fun party games, but not all of them were winners. A particularly bad example is Family Party: 30 Great Games Obstacle Arcade, released in 2012. While it had all the typical features – minigames, various modes, and multiple ways to play – it was plagued with problems. With 35 minigames spread across five worlds, the game suffered from glitchy controls, frustrating gameplay, and irritating voiceovers. It’s widely considered a terrible game and currently holds the lowest score of any Wii U title on Metacritic – it simply isn’t enjoyable.
5) The Letter

Released in 2014, The Letter is an adventure-mystery game created by a small independent studio and made available on the Nintendo eShop. The game centers around a boy who embarks on a journey to find his father after receiving an odd letter. Unfortunately, The Letter received overwhelmingly negative reviews, and the developers likely regret reading them. Critics found fault with almost every part of the game – the story, how it plays, the controls, its length, and more. Many felt it was both incomplete and unnecessarily drawn out, making it a frustrating experience best avoided.
