Making Spider-Man movies hasn’t always been easy. Both the Marvel Cinematic Universe films and those produced by Sony have faced challenges during production. Despite these difficulties, Spider-Man remains incredibly popular and profitable, leading to multiple reboots and cast changes – though these haven’t always gone smoothly.
In the late 1990s, when Marvel was struggling financially, Sony acquired the rights to make movies and TV shows featuring Spider-Man, who first appeared in Marvel Comics in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15. Sony then produced several Spider-Man films, both live-action and animated, though many faced challenges. Even the more recent agreement between Sony and Disney, which brought Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), hasn’t been without difficulties. Some of these issues were minor and quickly resolved, but others nearly derailed the character’s success on the big screen.
5) Sony Interfered With Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3

After Sony acquired the rights to Spider-Man, Sam Raimi was brought on to direct a film series starring Tobey Maguire, culminating in Spider-Man 3 in 2007. While the first two Spider-Man movies were popular with audiences, Spider-Man 3 didn’t live up to expectations due to heavy interference from the studio. Sony pushed Raimi to include several storylines and the villain Venom, resulting in a complicated plot, too many villains, and a famously awkward portrayal of Peter Parker. Many believe the film would have been better if Sony had allowed Raimi more creative freedom.
4) Shameik Moore’s Controversial Behavior May Impact Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

I’m a big fan of the Spider-Verse movies, and I love that they’ve given us Miles Morales as our Spider-Man. Shameik Moore does an amazing job voicing him. However, I was really disappointed to hear about some things that have come out recently. It seems like he’s been making some inappropriate comments online and even trying to pursue a relationship with Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Gwen Stacy, even though she’s engaged. It’s upsetting, and honestly, it makes it hard to enjoy his work as much now, knowing this has made people uncomfortable, including those he works with.
Honestly, I’ve been pretty concerned watching all this unfold with Shameik Moore. Laura Harrier from Spider-Man: Homecoming called him out for some really strange behavior – he posted a video hinting at a romance between them that was totally made up. And it hasn’t stopped there. He’s been reacting awkwardly to both Steinfeld and Harrier denying any romantic link, and it’s making me worry about Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Some people are even saying this whole situation might be contributing to the movie’s delays, and I’m just hoping it doesn’t ultimately hurt the film when it finally comes out. It’s a movie I’m really excited about, and all this drama is definitely a bit of a downer.
3) Spider-Man 4, The Amazing Spider-Man 3, & Spinoffs All Collapsed Before Getting Closure

Problems with Sony’s involvement led to disappointing results for Spider-Man 3, ultimately causing plans for Spider-Man 4 to be scrapped. Sam Raimi was replaced by Marc Webb, who began a reboot starring Andrew Garfield, but that series also faced difficulties. Similar to Raimi’s abandoned Spider-Man 4 – which would have featured John Malkovich as Vulture and Anne Hathaway as Black Cat – The Amazing Spider-Man 3 was cancelled, along with several spin-off movies focusing on characters like Venom, the Sinister Six, and Black Cat. Unfortunately, none of these storylines ever reached a conclusion, as they were all cancelled prematurely.
2) Disney & Sony’s Deal Ending Almost Removed Spider-Man From the MCU

In February 2015, a deal between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios brought Spider-Man into the main Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), largely thanks to efforts by the Russo brothers. Tom Holland first appeared as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War and quickly became a fan-favorite Spider-Man. However, in 2019, his time in the MCU almost ended. Negotiations for a continued partnership between Marvel and Sony fell apart, which would have meant Spider-Man leaving the MCU and existing solely within Sony’s separate Spider-Man Universe. This caused strong negative reactions from fans and even from Holland himself.
Initially, Sony Pictures chairman Tony Vinciquerra was convinced Sony could continue making Spider-Man movies on its own. However, fans strongly disagreed and reacted negatively, prompting Marvel and Sony to negotiate a new agreement. This led to the creation of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021 and paved the way for future installments, including the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While this situation ultimately seemed to improve the relationship between Disney and Sony, it created a period of uncertainty about Spider-Man’s future.
1) Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Failed to Include Spider-Man

The movie Venom was initially intended as a sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man 2. However, when that franchise was cancelled, Venom became its own standalone project. The 2018 film then launched Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, a series of movies focusing on Spider-Man’s villains as the main characters – without Spider-Man appearing at all. While Spider-Man’s absence wasn’t a major issue at first, it became increasingly noticeable as the series continued, eventually leading to the cancellation of the Sony Spider-Man Universe.
While the Venom movies generally did well, the second and third installments had some problems. However, Morbius, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter all failed at the box office and were big disappointments for Sony. This made fans appreciate that Spider-Man stayed with Marvel Studios instead of being solely controlled by Sony back in 2019. Without Spider-Man, Sony’s attempt at a shared universe struggled, but it ultimately allowed Spider-Man to have even better adventures within the main Marvel Cinematic Universe.
