Man, I love digging through old boxes in the attic! It’s like a time machine, bringing back all sorts of awesome memories – those toys you obsessed over as a kid, comics you spent your allowance on, even Pokémon cards. It’s amazing how quickly you forget about things until you stumble across them again. Honestly, it’s a great escape from the stress of adulting, like endless Zoom meetings and worrying about everything happening in the world. Most of this stuff isn’t worth much beyond the memories, which is perfect! But every now and then, you hear stories about someone finding something truly valuable hidden away… it makes those attic adventures even more exciting!
About five years ago, someone found a brand new, still-sealed copy of the original Super Mario Bros. game while cleaning out a desk drawer. The game had been bought as a Christmas present in 1986, but for some reason, it was never given to the recipient. It stayed hidden away for decades until it was rediscovered in 2021. The owner then sold it at Heritage Auctions for an incredible $660,000 on April 2, 2021 – far exceeding the previous record of $114,000 set in July 2020. It’s a little sad to think of a forgotten Christmas gift, but the owner certainly received a great reward for it!
Why Was This Sealed Copy Of Super Mario Bros. Worth So Much?

So, what made this copy of Super Mario Bros. sell for six times more than any other? According to Heritage Auctions, it wasn’t just its excellent condition. This version was made late in 1986 and still had the original plastic shrink wrap – Nintendo switched to sticker seals on their games in early 1987. Because the shrink wrap packaging was only used for a brief time, copies like this are extremely rare and highly sought after. Finding one in such good condition with this type of packaging is almost impossible.
Someone recently made an incredible discovery when they found a valuable item they’d owned for years. They explained it had been sitting in their office desk, forgotten, since the day they purchased it. Now, that item – a video game copy – is recognized as one of the most profitable and rare collectibles ever sold by Heritage Auctions. This just goes to show you might want to check those old boxes and drawers; you never know what treasures you could uncover!
Okay, so I just saw this and I’m blown away – Heritage Auctions has a copy of the original Super Mario Bros. game with the NES console listed right now, and it’s already at almost $800,000! And the auction isn’t even over yet, so it could climb even higher before it’s all said and done. Seriously, that’s insane!
