Dylan Dreyer Confesses Her Son Preferred Nanny Over Her as Baby

Dylan Dreyer woke up to a new reality.

Being a working mom to Calvin, Oliver, and Rusty – they’re 9, 6, and 4 – and co-parenting with my ex, Brian Fichera, I’ve definitely thought a lot about the pressure I felt to go back to work so soon after having them. It’s something I’ve been reflecting on, and I remember feeling a lot of doubt about whether I was making the right choice.

On a recent episode of her podcast, The Parent Chat, Dreyer explained that she returned to work when her oldest child was just three months old. She relied on a strong support system – what she calls a ‘village’ – including a nanny, her mother, and her mother-in-law. She fondly remembered her nanny, but also recalled a time when her son, Calvin, around four or five months old, only wanted to be with her.

The 44-year-old explained that because of his work schedule – which allowed him to be home by 11 a.m. – he often cooked dinner, but his partner seemed to prefer someone else.

I often hear worries about the challenges of modern life, but recently a guest named Connie Simpson – you might know her as ‘Nanny Connie,’ she cares for children of stars like Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Justin Timberlake – offered a really refreshing viewpoint. It made me rethink things!

Simpson advised against being critical of the situation, encouraging people to instead feel positive about it. He explained that it would be much worse if children always clung to him when he came home, instead of being wary of someone who had been caring for them all day. He pointed out the difficulty of seeing your child afraid of someone they’ve spent the entire day with.

The baby nurse also said, “It takes a community to raise a child, and that’s a wonderful thing. Don’t feel like you have to do everything on your own, and don’t worry if you need help from others.”

Dreyer used to feel ashamed about needing a nanny, admitting she was very reluctant to talk about it because she felt guilty asking for help. But after talking with Simpson, she realized how wonderful it is to have support as a mother.

Having a good nanny is crucial because it creates a support network and allows parents to prioritize self-care. It truly takes a village to make things work, and I couldn’t manage without mine.
