One of the Best RPGs of 2025 Gets Free Release on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2

A highly-rated RPG from 2025 is now available as a free download on both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 through the eShop. 2025 was a fantastic year for role-playing games, with popular titles like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, The Outer Worlds 2, and Monster Hunter Wilds leading the way. While those four games received a lot of attention, another excellent RPG quietly emerged and is now being highlighted with a free demo on the Nintendo eShop.

On October 5th, Bandai Namco Entertainment and Media Vision launched Digimon Story: Time Stranger, the seventh installment in the Digimon Story series – and the first new game in eight years! It initially came out for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X. Now, on July 10th, it’s coming to both Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. To let players try it out, a free demo is available now, allowing Digimon and RPG fans to get a head start and continue their progress in the full game when it releases next month.

Fan-Favorite RPG

Despite being the seventh game in the Digimon Story series, Time Stranger is a self-contained adventure and a popular one with fans. While it has a respectable score of 81 on Metacritic, player reviews are even more enthusiastic. It boasts a 93% approval rating on Steam and a 96/100 score on the PlayStation Store. Beyond its quality, Time Stranger offers a huge amount of content, with up to 70 hours of RPG gameplay.

The full game will be priced at $70, so this demo is a great way to try it out before you buy. That’s a significant cost, especially considering Nintendo doesn’t offer refunds for digital purchases.

It’s well known that big, open-world RPGs often don’t come to Nintendo consoles, leaving fans with fewer options compared to players on other platforms. While this year has a few good RPGs like Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave and a port of Elden Ring, the release of this new RPG from Bandai Namco is particularly welcome.
