The hugely popular manga Attack on Titan finished its run on April 9th, 2021, but it remains incredibly popular today. Created by Hajime Isayama, the series first appeared in 2009 and gained even more fans after the anime adaptation premiered in 2013. When it came time to animate the final part of the story, the studio WIT stepped away, and MAPPA took over. MAPPA, known for anime like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, delivered a high-quality adaptation that concluded the story in 2023.
After a four-year jump in time, the story dramatically changes, focusing on Eren Yeager’s journey as he discovers the truth about the world and the Titans. The manga’s ending proved very divisive, with many fans unhappy about the tragic fate of the main character and several unanswered questions. While initially considered one of the worst endings in the Shonen genre, the anime adaptation addressed many of these concerns. The creator, Hajime Isayama, collaborated closely with the animation studio MAPPA to craft a more satisfying conclusion for viewers.
Attack on Titan‘s Ending Is More Widely Accepted Now

The manga’s conclusion was quite controversial, featuring complex scenes and the deaths of fan-favorite characters. While it still had its critics, the ending became more accepted after the anime adaptation aired, likely because time had passed and the adaptation addressed some disappointments. It’s common for endings that aren’t straightforward to be divisive. One particularly jarring moment, Mikasa kissing Eren’s head after his death, was intended to be emotional, but its presentation didn’t resonate with many viewers.
The story didn’t really conclude, leaving the door open for future installments, but the original creator hasn’t added to it yet. Years after Eren’s death, Paradis remains in ruins. A young boy and his dog stumble upon Eren’s grave, marked by a tree that looks just like the one where Ymir first obtained the power of the Titans. This suggests the boy might also gain Titan abilities, potentially unleashing that same destructive force once more. It seems the world is still in danger of repeating the past, meaning true peace may never be achieved.
