The latest series from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is already a big success for the franchise, especially because it brings back a popular character, generating buzz for a future Marvel movie. This gets Marvel’s 2026 film slate off to a strong start. While Marvel’s shows on Disney+ have had varying levels of success, a major issue was the quick pace of releasing new content.
To fix problems with recent releases in the Multiverse Saga, the company slowed down production. This seems to be helping the new Marvel TV shows, and one key reason for their success is the return of a familiar face.
Marvel’s New TV Show Includes A Major MCU Return
All eight episodes of Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man are now streaming on Disney+. Originally planned for a December 2025 release, the series became available on January 27, 2026. The show features the return of familiar faces, including Sir Ben Kingsley as Trevor Slattery (the fake Mandarin) and Arian Moayed as Agent Cleary, who previously appeared in Spider-Man: No Way Home and Ms. Marvel.
The key to the success of Wonder Man wasn’t a famous actor, but the director behind the camera. Destin Daniel Cretton previously directed some of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most impressive action scenes in 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He then directed the first two episodes of Wonder Man – “Matinee” and “Self-Tape.”
Beyond directing the Marvel TV show, Jeff Cretton played a crucial role in shaping its overall feel, look, and characters. He was also a co-creator of the Disney+ series Wonder Man, alongside Andrew Guest, making him a key figure in its development.
Wonder Man Boosts Excitement For Spider-Man: Brand New Day
As of today, the new Marvel series Wonder Man is receiving excellent reviews, with a 90% approval rating from critics and a remarkable 91% score from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Though we’re awaiting streaming viewership data, the incredibly positive response is already building anticipation for the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day featuring Tom Holland.
Destin Daniel Cretton is directing the next Spider-Man movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that’s great news. He’s already proven his talent with successful projects like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Wonder Man, so I’m confident his Brand New Day film will be a success. Wonder Man brought a fresh perspective to the MCU, and with the Spider-Man movie beginning a new story for Tom Holland’s Peter Parker, Cretton is the perfect choice to lead it.
