When Disney bought Fox in 2019, it gained access to popular franchises like X-Men, Fantastic Four, Aliens, and Predator, significantly changing the future for both companies. However, the merger also impacted some existing Fox projects. One notable example is a 2020 horror film that unfortunately came out just as movie theaters were struggling. Despite a poor theatrical run, the movie found a dedicated audience on streaming and is definitely worth checking out if you enjoy horror.
Released in 2020, the horror film The Empty Man unfortunately debuted during the COVID-19 pandemic, which significantly hurt its chances in theaters. With many cinemas closed and people unable to attend screenings, the film struggled to find an audience despite a $16 million production budget, ultimately earning less than $5 million. Thankfully, it’s now available to stream on Hulu, and horror fans should definitely give it a watch – it’s a hidden gem!
The Empty Man’s Comic Book Origins
At one hundred and thirty-seven minutes long, The Empty Man tells the story of James Lasombra, a former detective haunted by personal loss who gets caught up in a terrifying urban legend. What makes this 2020 horror film stand out isn’t just its scares, but its clever and unpredictable story. It culminates in a surprising twist that will leave viewers thinking. Though it never came out on DVD or Blu-ray, you can currently watch The Empty Man on Hulu.
You might not know that The Empty Man began as a comic book series published by Boom Studios. Created by writer Cullen Bunn and artists Vanesa R. Del Rey and Jesús Hervás, the comic is much more expansive and features even more terrifying creatures than the movie. The series consists of three story arcs – The Empty Man, The Empty Man: Recurrence, and The Empty Man: Manifestation – and effectively delivers horror through the comic book medium. While there are currently no plans for future installments, Cullen Bunn is a well-known comic book writer with other popular titles like The Sixth Gun, Deadpool Kills The Marvel Universe, The Venomverse, and Harrow County. His creative work on this horror comic has helped The Empty Man gain a dedicated fanbase in both comic book and film formats.
