5 Years On, Netflix Quietly Re-Adds an Underrated Sci-Fi  From the Team Who Saved The MCU’s Daredevil Reboot

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have become known as incredibly creative filmmakers in Hollywood, consistently making thought-provoking films with limited resources, like The Endless and Something in the Dirt. Their talent for blending complex science fiction ideas with relatable human stories caught the attention of Marvel Studios, who brought them on to help with several ambitious TV projects. They directed what many consider the best episode of Moon Knight, “Summon the Suit,” and played a key role in shaping the storyline of Loki’s second season. Their biggest impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though, came when they were asked to lead a creative refresh of Daredevil: Born Again, bringing the series back in line with the popular Netflix version.

Despite their recent successes, one of directors Benson and Moorhead’s lesser-known films has quietly returned to a major streaming service. The 2020 sci-fi thriller, Synchronic, stars Anthony Mackie, best known as Captain America from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It originally premiered on Netflix in the US in April 2021 and gained a good following, but was removed in April 2024 when its licensing agreement ended. Now, without a lot of promotion, Netflix has added the movie back to its selection.

The movie Synchronic centers around two New Orleans paramedics, Steve and Dennis, who are shaken by a string of bizarre and disturbing deaths. They uncover a connection to a powerful new drug that messes with reality, taking those who use it on a frightening and unpredictable trip.

You Should Definitely Watch Synchronic

What sets the film Synchronic apart is its clever take on time travel. The movie centers around a new drug that lets people physically travel to the past, but it has limitations. Where someone takes the pill determines when they go back in time, connecting them to events that happened at that specific location long ago. The filmmakers skillfully reveal how the drug works through the characters’ experiences. Importantly, the story steers clear of typical sci-fi clichés, instead focusing on the emotional impact of this discovery, making it a gripping story about life, death, regret, and friendship.

The film Synchronic really highlights the creative talents that would later make these directors a great match for directing complex stories within the Marvel universe. Their early work with complicated time travel ideas and emotionally engaging characters in Synchronic clearly prepared them for the challenge of directing the second season of Loki. Beyond the skillful direction, the film features what is likely one of Anthony Mackie’s strongest performances to date. He plays Steve, a paramedic facing a terminal illness, and delivers a powerfully moving portrayal of a man who finds new purpose when he’s lost all hope. This compelling performance significantly enhances the film, making Synchronic a must-see for any Anthony Mackie fan.

Synchronic is now available on Netflix.
